Just imagine using a C1 and a two cent trans Mississippi as postage.
Both would have been very inexpensive stamps in 1933. And if they were hinged, or had no gum, or had a thin, then postage was probably getting the best of them. In 1937 the 286 cataloged .35 (about $6.50 today) and the C1 $1. So a damaged or no gum example would be worth very little back then.
