I would assume forensics would cost a fortune

Do you think there are unscrupulous people buying regummed or no gum stamps and adding cancels?

I believe that the obsolete VSC6000 or the current VSC8000 can detect modern inks.

PSE or PSAG own this machine?

By the way, as a collector of used USA classics... I personally believe this practice is widespread of adding cancels to very well regummed or no gum unused classic stamps

I believe Columbians, Transmissippi, Pan Americans, airmail, parcel post etc etc are ripe for the taking. Also any low value well centered stamp with no gum is susceptible due to major dollar blow up when you get to 90 or higher grades.

Nothing like turning a 2$ Columbian unused with regum that is beautifully centered (sell for 250$) into a 1500$ stamp by adding a little ink in the corner (advertised as a "gorgeous face free used 95 jumbo )
