On April 10, 2002 Great Britain issued its EUROPA set of 5 circus-themed stamps with stylized performers designed by Ron Fuller. The 'E' rate stamp (SG #2277), shown here, depicts three trick tri-cyclists. From stampmagazine.co.uk, "One curiosity, immediately beneath the Queen's head, is the value 'E' for the European letter rate represented as 'E of euro'. This must have been one of the confusions which eventually saw this particular rate dropped from the ranks of the NVI's." |

Stamp depicts (left to right): Emil Fischer (1852-1919), German chemist, known as the "father of biochemistry", who won the chemistry prize for his work on sugar and and purine syntheses; and then two Dutch physicists who shared the physics prize: Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943) for his measurement of the splitting of spectral lines by a strong magnetic field, now known as the Zeeman effect, and Hendrik Lorentz (1852-1928) whose theory of electromagnetic radiation explains the Zeeman effect. |
