On June 6, 19809 Canada issued a se-tenant pair of 17c stamps commemorating both the centenary of the writing of "O Canada", the national anthem, and the song's adoption (1980) as such. One of these stamps (Sc #858) depicts Calixa Lavallee, the composer of the music (1880), Adolphe Basile Routheir, writer of the French lyrics (1880), and Robert Stanley Weir, writer of the English lyrics (1908).

From wikipedia, "The song was originally commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Theodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony."

This November 10, 1972 40pf stamp (Mi #748) of the Federal Republic of Germany commemorates the 150th anniversary of the official recognition of the Cologne Carnival.

From wikipedia, "Every year three people are granted the titles of "Jungfrau", "Prinz" and "Bauer" (maiden, prince and peasant, respectively) who pay a large sum of money for the privilege...Traditionally, the maiden is always portrayed by a man dressed as a female. As an entity, the trio has existed since 1883."

Even in his small role as Max in Sunset Boulevard, Stroheim was unforgettable.

On August 22, 1960 Turkey issued a two-stamp set commemorating the International Council of Women (ICW). The 75 kurus value of the set depicts three stylized female forms.

In my opinion, the bird's nest/symbol shown on the stamp seems to run counter to the idea of equal rights and opportunities for all.

From wikipedia, "During a visit to Europe in 1882, American suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony discussed the idea of an international women's organization with reformers in several countries...The National Woman Suffrage Association, led by Anthony and Stanton, organized the founding meeting of the ICW, which convened in Washington, D.C., on March 25, 1888."

Here is the USA's May 5, 1964 5c stamp (Sc #1181) commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Wilderness of the U.S. Civil War.

From wikipedia, "The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5-7, 1864 during the American Civil War. It was the first battle of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The fighting occurred in a wooded area near Locust Grove, Virginia, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Fredericksburg. Both armies suffered heavy casualties, nearly 29,000 in total, a harbinger of a war of attrition by Grant against Lee's army and, eventually, the Confederate capital, Richmond, Virginia. The battle was inconclusive, as Grant disengaged and continued his offensive."

This October 15, 1968 6c stamp of the USA commemorated the 75th anniversary of the 1893 Cherokee Strip land run. Stamp depicts racing homesteaders, or 'boomers' at the beginning of the event. Second pic is from wikipedia.

From wikipedia, "After the issuance of Benjamin Harrison's Presidential Proclamation, which forbade all grazing leases in the Cherokee Outlet after October 2, 1890 effectively eliminated tribal profits from cattle leases, the Cherokee came to an agreement to sell these lands to the government at a price ranging from $1.40 to $2.50 per acre the following year...The Land Run itself began at noon on September 16, 1893, with an estimated 100,000 participants hoping to stake claim to part of the 6 million acres and 40,000 homesteads on what had formerly been Cherokee grazing land."

On September 4, 1961 the USA issued this 4c stamp (Sc #1186) commemorating the 50th anniversary of the state of Wisconsin's 1911 Workmen's Compensation Act. Stamp depicts the scales of justice leveling industry and workers. The actual size of the family of three shown on the stamp is approx. 6.5mm x 5.5mm.

From wi101.wisc.edu, "not only did Wisconsin's new Workmen's Compensation Act create a new framework for workers' compensation, it also promoted labor rights by expanding protection to all workers (not just to those in hazardous jobs) and closing the worst legal loopholes in the old system."
