anecdotally, these likely counterfeit stamps are flooding the market...last week $13-14 for a roll of 100 forever flag stamps, this week $8. |

Just like the used car dealers. Losing money on every sale, but making it up with volume. |

US Postal Service patents anti-fake tech for stamps: Quote: January 24, 2020 Counterfeiting of postage stamps remains a problem worldwide, and the US Postal Service has been working on ways to protect them with authentication technologies. It has just been awarded a US patent – No. 10,535,211 – that covers an approach based on the application of an adhesive incorporating taggants that can emit luminescence in response to a signal, such as a particular light or electromagnetic energy source. It also covers the use of the taggants within the substrate of the stamp, such as paper, or the ink used to print it.
The USPS and US Postal Inspection Service (USPS) don't publish any data on just how big a problem stamp fraud is in the US – or even provide an obvious way to report it – but the patent suggests it isn't an insignificant problem. https://www.postaltimes.com/postaln...-for-stamps/ |

I find reading this thread quite bizarre. If this is forgery, then it should be addressed by the appropriate authorities. I wonder what would happen if some seller put up "mint fresh" one dollar American currency notes for 40 cents each on ebay. I would hope there would be a different response. Is counterfeiting different to forgery? |

While I agree wholeheartedly that counterfeit stamps should be taken seriously I kind of understand the difference from currency. Currency counterfeiting if left unchecked can destroy faith in the dollar and destroy the economy. Our politicians are doing very well with the destruction portion on their own thank you very much. |

The stamps category is rife with these listings of counterfeits. At some point the authorities are going to take notice. Hopefully it simply becomes a matter of ebay separating current face value postage from collectible stamps rather than simply removing stamps from the platform entirely due to expediency. These [CENSORED] criminals are going to ruin it for everyone. |

Not too far off of people collecting large amounts of uncancelled stamps (US, GB, Australia) and selling it as discount postage. Don't know if still popular, but at one time seemed everywhere. Peoples philosophy seemed to be, it the PO don't care, why should I. I hate the quick black magic marker, but it was at least it was revenue protection. Pat |

Quote: Not too far off of people collecting large amounts of uncancelled stamps (US, GB, Australia) and selling it as discount postage. Not even remotely close. The Post Office was paid for the postage. These thieves are selling fake stamps that the Post Office never saw a penny for and when used to mail things the Post office will perform the service for free. Of course we all pay for it in the end because the rates go up. |

Wrong. The PO loses exactly the same amount of money on a reused stamp as it does on a counterfeit stamp. |
