I had to check my vague memory but I was indeed in junior high school, a.k.a. middle school, in southeast Pennsylvania. finishing 7th grade according to my calculations. My mother and father had a little bit of a US collection going, nothing significant, but I had become interested in things postal and enjoyed trips to the post office with my father at which he might get a couple plate blocks of the latest commemoratives.
I have a vague memory of our mail being interrupted for a couple days, but I am uncertain if this actually happened or was speculation on the part of my parents. I recall their concern at what they considered a screw up by then President Nixon, although they had both voted for him. I do remember my father expressing some sympathy with the postal workers as their wage scale was, in his words, "not right that they need food stamps." Beyond that, I was focused on 7th grade French, what with irregular verbs, the girls in that and other classes I hoped vainly to impress, and finishing my wood shop project which involved inhaling lots of sawdust....
Edited to add that philatelically, my father started to sour on stamp collecting when the 1973 postal service issue came out, the one with ten stamps showing different aspects of postal work. He (and I) viewed it as a bit of unprecedented self-aggrandizement after a reasonable action back in 1970.
