Hey, Rod222, This is an area I've done a little studying in.
The number "40" is the code assigned to the postal district of Chiapas, which is overprinted on the stamp as well. The "81" is the year of the consignment to Chiapas. Value per Follansbee, 1998, is $12.00.
These stamps during this period of time may or may not have the postal district overprinted with the numerals. The direct overprints were applied at the district level and were required to be applied by all districts. Some districts never did, other always did, while again others were somewhere between the 2 points.
The numerals were applied in Mexico City then dispersed to the various districts. The postal districts code changed of the years so you need guide books to determine which post actually used the stamp.
There is a great deal of complexity in how this system of codes and overprints were done during this classic period of Mexican stamps.

I'm guessing there are about a zillion collecting possibilities with this series. Very interesting! |

That's a big High Five to you Warrehouse I knew how ornery these can be. I actually thought Ryan would reply, I had it in my mind he had assisted me some years ago on another Hidalgo issue opt. There used to be a wonderful resource with unbelievable depth called "MEPSI" on the web, but this time all googles came up blank. My last query was "Vera Cruz" So thanks so much, very helpful Warrehouse. here are two others with numbers |

The stamp overprinted '380' is a foreign mail issue forced into being after Mexico joined the UPU in 1879. The earlier issues did not meet the UPU guidelines. The '3' is the code for the district of Veracruz, it is supposed to be one word. The '80' is the year the consignment was sent to Veracruz from Mexico City. Value $2.
The stamp overprinted '381' is a domestic mail issue which was available for local mail only. This one is also from Veracruz, but consignment was sent in 1881. Value $10.
The last one you've shown is of course Veracruz, 1856, value $2.50.

Interesting that the spelling of the country is "Mejico" on the Veracruz, and "Mexico" on the others. |

That's exactly what I thought first time I saw it Rohumpy, "Mehico" reminded me of black and white TV serial "The Cisco Kid" and "Pancho" (Let's went)

"Mejico" was the spelling on all Mexican stamps from 1856-64, until Emperor Maximilian's government in 1864-66 when it change to "Mexico". However Maximilians's 2nd issue changed the inscription to "Mexicano" in 1866. By 1868 "Mexico" was used again through 1883. In 1884 once again the inscription reverted to "Mexicano". In 1895 with the Mail Transportation Issues "Mexico" was once again used on 12 of the 13 issues. The 5c for whatever reason was inscribed "Republica Mexicana". Then in 1916 the Carranza issue of 1916, Scott 574/5 was inscribed "S.P. Mexicano". Since that issue all stamps are inscribed "Mexico". |

Hey guys/girls. I know this is a little late, but just got around to reading old posts yesterday. I was going through some old material last night and came across this item (see rod222 post). Had never seen one of these till his post. The item appears on a piece of generic postal stationery (known as a Formular Card). Sure wish someone had used this, but hey I'll take it anyway I can find it. Bob |
