Welcome here! One thing you can do is post a picture of the entire piece?

Welcome jomic Please post a scan or a photo of the article, front and back, so we give you a better guide. The postmark you've shown isn't rare but without seeing the full picture we can't help very much. |

Thanks jomic The addressee is General Sir Peregrine Maitland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peregrine_MaitlandThe 'PAID' handstamp was used for official correspondence. Lowe states it was used from 1844 to 1858. Maitland in New South Wales is named after him. Closer to home (mine), the gold field of Maitland Bar was also named after him. |

You have a cover handled by someone whom fought at the Battle of Waterloo. That to me is exciting. |

All I can say you two, Bobby De La Run & Rob222, is, WOW! The information is outstanding and the pictures are breathtaking. To think that I hold a piece of paper that was once held by a person who fought at Waterloo!! AND a General at that. Thank you, you two; It's nice to belong to such a nice Stamp Community Forum Family! |

Our pleasure jomic. Again, welcome to the friendliest corner on the internet for stamps & postal history The one thing we haven't done is talk about monetary value. For that, we need to see the back of the envelope! |

Quote: Lower left of cover is the signature of the sender (I think) A pretty good chance instead that this is docketing added by the recipient to remind him who sent the letter without having to re-open it. Note the difference in the ending "t" of the name and the "t" at the end of street, the difference in ink color indicating a different time of application, and the slight difference in slant. |

Interesting, we need to get SCF "Penguins" (The Shanahans) to offer their opinion. I think Eunice translates early Brit covers.
I have an open mind. I was unable to translate the scribbles under "Maitland" and the bottom corner (Thought I could see Reg for regiment amongst it)
This cover was just 2 years before Sir Maitland passed away, and 8 weeks after he was Knighted?
Obviously not a Maitland signature, but maybe an Aide de camp?
sent an email..

Pricing your cover. Bobby may have a price from Howe, regarding the Pmk crowned "PAID" My information is only 1983, Whitney Catalogue "Collect British Postmarks" prices the crowned "FREE" at £3 (Cat#16 "many variations") Your cover I would suggest at 85% of the current value.
Add to that the value of the adressee, and perhaps a "CRICKET" thematic, that may, or may not add value. Note: "Fronts" only attract 75% of quoted values.Check ebay for similar pre stamp covers. |

How about FitzRoy Somerset? Somerset, Fitzroy James Henry MP Truro 1818-20&1826-29 1788-1855 It looks like that to us but we cheated and contacted a 'source' in the UK who happened to be awake - lucky!
Regards. Eunice and Ron |

Wow! Brilliant! Thanks Eunice and Ron. Dates qualify. Alas! it does not solve, whether name / signature of sender (or aide) or John's suggestion of "contents" I personally remain with the former, solely on common accepted procedure at the time. (and in specific location on the cover) |
