The US First Class postage rate has not actually risen since 1975 when factoring in inflation (top line in chart above) .

And given the fact that the US First Class Postage rate is currently far below the international average of First Class rates, I am unsure why anyone would be complaining about rate increases. The postal rate increases this year may only keep up inflation (depending upon how the anticipated significant jumps in interest rates impacts the economy).

rodg - Royal Mail's in profit, although it doesn't have some of the baggage that has been attached to the USPS.

It's notable how large the increases in the extra-ounce and postcard rates are, compared to the unexpectedly small increase in the Forever stamp rate.

Here's a chart showing how the extra-ounce and postcard rates have changed over time, as percentages of the one-ounce letter rate. It's interesting how dramatically the extra-ounce rate has fallen in the past half-century, and how that trend has reversed in the past few years. I wonder what that tells us about the changing economics of mail handling....

The lower cost premium for extra weight is not surprising. For letters and flats, space occupied is likely more important than weight since the size restricts the possible weight. I wonder how often a mail delivery truck maxes out on weight vs space.
