Cdn, my booklet with the "Ghost" counter is not a result of over inking on the ones above or below. You can actually see the slight indentation where the inking device struck it. Also, it was the only counter tab in a pack of 50 I examined. Edit: Here is the link to the image. https://goscf.com/t/8204&whichpage=3#71262 |

I still think (see previous posts be me and Bee See)s) that the partial and hardly-anything-there strikes are just that, ghosts.
The inking of the roller or brush striking device that did make those marks is done to make one good dark mark per 50 booklets. I too have seen bundles of 50 (2 packs of 25) that have had two marks but I think this mark is just an optical marking so an optical reading device later on in the production line will be able to pick up the darkness (and not a ghost or light mark or partial mark) and that will trigger a switch a bit later (depending on how fast the booklets are passing through the printing process and production line) so that a pack of 25 will get paper-wrapped and 2 packs of 25 will get shrink-wrapped and bundled together.
having two marks per 50 does not mean that the marking device is out of order, just that we do not know exactly how the production line works.
It is all a matter of timing most likely. And optical reading and triggering. Probably no more meaning to in than that.
However, it is and would be interesting to see how the process works and see that a Full strike was followed by partial strikes and ghost strikes as the possible over inking of the original striking had left some on the roller (rollers, brushes??) or metal brush and it simply kept applying this to the next and the next booklet in the line.
Nice to see a press sheet as Bee See mentioned a while back too. Understanding the order that things happened in is not only of importance for the counting marks, but for the exact odds of certain combinations happening also.
This should be able to be deduced (hopefully) bu knowing what we know now. Perhaps the list of serial (control) numbers is a bit misleading in this matter as it is not including all the ones and twos alone? But, without knowing how the booklets were actually printed we do not know enough to stick the ones and twos in willy-nilly and arrive at a correct conclusion. We must extrapolate from the known data which could lead to a false conclusion. We may be missing a piece of the puzzle. |

I am new to this forum but found it extremely useful. I checked over 200 booklets in the Ottawa area and found 15 with counter tabs not previously reported on the spreadsheet. I also found a few # 1 and #2 and all the # 1 (6 of them) had the 2 dot feature I'll forward list to Puzz for keeping track of the new numbers. None of those I found had upper number, were all lower |

Welcome Gilles le timbre ! Thank you for collecting the numbers. All new data is welcome. You will not be able to email me through the SCF forum system until you reach 50 posts. But you may contact me through ebay puzzler47, see ebay link a few posts above this one, and I will email you back. I will not (and you should now either) post your email on the forum for the whole world to see. Publisher's Clearing House will be on your front lawn with a big cheque. (Probably not.) edit fixing typos |

Quite a lucky find that was. Glad I scanned it at depth for later study.
I was wishing I could have asked everyone to scan their booklets at 600dpi and email them to me but I am not sure I have a big enough hard drive nor back-up storage.
Oh, Sweden booklet of four Marine Life stamps is Scott # 2638 a-d and called Marine Mammals in 2011 Scott in the library today. Forgot to look at Canada to see if they changed the name also. |
