New To Stamps, Looking To See What I Own.

Bought a about 1000stamps for 100 dollars a few years ago and forgot about them. I like the historical value of them so far. Opinions?

Hard to tell without clear pictures, but I' afraid you aren't going to get your $100 back. Most of these are common or damaged. The Argentine stamps have been extensively forged. Any more?

I agree with GeoffHa that unless there is some tressure hidden in behind the pictured stamps there really is nothing showing that justifies a $100 price. All pictured are common and of little value and next to no value for the damaged ones. This is the type of bundleware that you should be able to pick up for under $10.

It appears to me to be a good start on a new hobby.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of old stamps were issued in very large quantities (often millions or even billions) and the supply typically outstrips the demand. There are sometimes varieties of a stamp which are less common or even rare. Collectors enjoy looking for these less common stamps but be aware that older stamp have often been already examined dozens of times by previous owners and dealers. This all makes stumbling upon a high value stamp very unlikely.

But you can increase your chances of finding less common stamps by investing a lot of time and money in learning the hobby. Yu can find examples of folks who have made 'finds' but this is not the typical experience, particularly with inexperienced hobbyists.

But the hobby has a lot of other intrinsic value as a worthwhile pastime.

Economically, IMO you got cheated. But if this leads to some enjoyment or leads to a new hobby, then it was money well-spent.

In terms of value, I can only speak for myself.
I based value on my 'fun factor' or how much 'enjoyment time' a get out of a purchase. If I go bowling, golfing, take in a play or movie I would normally be spending about $25 per hour or more. So if I paid $100 for a group of stamps, I would be satisfied if I got 4 or more hours of enjoyment.

The British stamps you posted are very common stamps. Unless there are watermark varieties they are not worth much. Some of those British stamps, I am afraid, are in a very bad state. The 1s green Queen Victoria Jubilee green, unfortunately, is all that makes a stamp worthless: it is in a bad condition, it shows traces of toning, the colour has run during soaking, and the cancellation is a smudgy parcel cancellation.

I notice an Irish 'symbols' stamp at the top of your first picture. There is also a Dutch Juliana 'en profil' stamp. They are common as well and have minimal monetary value.

Seeing photos of some of your stamps reminds me of precisely what got me started collecting as a kid, and the enthusiasm I felt them has not waned some 40+ years later. The attached picture is excerpted from one of yours. I got my start as a kid with a very similar mixture of postage and revenue stamps. That little grouping raises any number of intriguing questions and observations, any of which you may want to consider:

Aesthetics/Design
Note the distinct artistic/stylistic differences in their designs. Some of them look fussy and "old fashioned" while others have a more modern look (though still all 19th and early 20th century). Note both the differences and similarities in the Washington portrayals, and also the Franklin portraits.

Size
Why are the revenue stamps so much longer than the postage stamps, and why is one of them printed in two colors? But that aside, what is a revenue stamp? What does "Inland Exchange" refer to (the scarlet/orange stamp)?

Cancellations
The postage stamps are all canceled with a hand- or machine-applied cancel of some kind, but the revenue stamps have manuscript ("ms") cancels. Also note that the ms cancels contain a lot of information (why is that? Good question!)

Perforations
Note differences in perforations. One stamp has none, one only has perfs on the sides. Why is that? (Good question!)

Related... The printing of that blue/black revenue stamp seems to be off-center. What caused that?

So just from that little group alone there's plenty to investigate, and that's half the fun! Don't worry about condition right now. You have a great collection to get started with.

You asked about historical value, and most answers focused on money value.
I like the historical value too, so, damaged or not, forgery or not, I would look into the history of each stamp, what happened in the country when they were issued, and so on.
I think I saw at least two American revenue stamps, I wonder how old they are and how were they used.
If you want to keep on collecting, I suggest, as others said, to look for the 1000 stamps for 10$ bundles.
