The End of a Chapter...
August 31st will be my last day with H.R. Harmer. Joining me in this amicable departure are my colleagues Alison Sullivan and Alyssa Baumgardner, who have helped me immeasurably in my mission to provide collectors with an auction house that honors philately's past while pioneering a bright and exciting future.

We are incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished together. I joined the H.R. Harmer team over seven years ago, and in that time I have been fortunate enough to conduct over 55 auctions and handle some of the most interesting and impressive collections to cross the auction block. Much more important than the sales, however, are the personal relationships I've been able to forge with philatelists around the globe, no small number of whom have encouraged me every step of the way.

I would also like to thank the ownership of the Global Philatelic Network, specifically Dieter Michelson and Karl Louis, for their unwavering support from the moment I first met them at Monacophil 2015. I could not have asked for a better network of colleagues than the GPN has provided me, and I look forward to seeing the ways in which they continue to set the bar for the philatelic auction industry.

Although this is the end of our time with H.R. Harmer, it is by no means the end our time in philately. Alison, Alyssa, and myself never felt as if we were simply running an auction house. Through the work we have undertaken we believe that we have started a movement that will continue to reimagine and redefine a hobby that has so much to offer future generations.

I am extremely grateful to every single one of our clients, consignors, friends, and colleagues that we have met along the way, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Charles Epting

Yes, I read that and wondered what the back story is. Epting and company have taken a vastly different approach to the business, and I have to wonder if it did not pan out financially. There was some really strange estimate stuff going on with zero starts and so on. I never was able to figure it out. Lucky for Harmer they have the Erivan auctions to fall back on.

Very interesting.

Maybe they finished selling the Erivan material finally, and that was the charter?

Also, timing is interesting with Matt Kewriga just starting up tomorrow at GASS.

Not too surprising given the email I received from GPN last week about Harmer representation at GASS. "H. R. Harmer, the American company of the Global Philatelic has to at short notice cancel participation at the Great American Stamp Show (GASS) in Cleveland August 10-13." They also said in that email that two GPN execs would attend instead to represent GPN and H. R. Harmer at the show. The main thing not being said is who caused the parting, and that may never be announced.

Sounds like the plan is for H. R. Harmer to continue in name.

Yes, it seems the cancellation was so close to the show that even the dealer listing was not updated to "cancelled" as with several other dealers.

It will not be easy to wipe out Epting's presence. If you look at the Harmer webpage right now it is packed with his videos and photos and general work. Charles was big into social media and really got Harmer's name out there. He also did much to get postal history and Harmer auctions into legacy media.

I do think that GPN is going to have to issue a statement clearing the air sooner than later.

BUT, here is the big thing. I see no future auctions posted on Harmer's website which is never the case.

Perhaps this has something to do with what has transpired:

The Global Philatelic Network announces new foundations for the future
According to a Press Release just received from the Global Philatelic Network:

On Thursday of this week, the doors of IBRA 2023 (International Philatelic Exhibition) will open. For four days from Thursday to Sunday, 25 to 28 May, the exhibition will be the meeting place for all philatelists. To kick off this exciting week, we have some announcements to make about how our group is securing our long traditions and current strong foundations for the future.

The group of stamp auction houses under the roof of Köhler & Corinphila Holding GmbH, known as The Global Philatelic Network, i.e. Heinrich Köhler GmbH in Wiesbaden (Germany), Corinphila Auctions in Zurich (Switzerland), H.R. Harmer in New York (United States of America), John Bull Auctions in Hong Kong, and Corinphila Veilingen, (The Netherlands), is pleased to announce new appointments to our management and partnerships.

Changes from 1 July 2023
As of 1 July 2023, Jonas Hällström RDP will join the group as new Managing Director of Köhler & Corinphila Holding GmbH. He will take up this new position together with Tobias Huylmans, who will also become the new Managing Director of the Group. Tobias Huylmans is currently Managing Director of Heinrich Köhler, and he will now expand his involvement within the Group. Jonas Hällström will also be assigned to the position of Managing Director of Corinphila Auctions in Switzerland.

At the same time that the Group's new management structure takes effect, Tobias Huylmans and Jonas Hällström will become new partners and shareholders of Köhler & Corinphila Holding GmbH. The Community of Heirs to Erivan Haub will remain as the main shareholder. Karl Louis and Dieter Michelson will remain unchanged as partners and shareholders.

Changes from 1 January 2024
Karl Louis will step down from the daily business at the end of 2023, and Dieter Michelson will reduce his operational activities. They will both remain as shareholders and directors of the board of the company.

From 1 January 2024, Jonas Hällström will share the position of Managing Director of Corinphila Auctions with Antoine Clavel, who has been Managing Director of Corinphila Auctions since 2014.

Dieter Michelson will remain as Managing Director of Köhler & Corinphila Holding GmbH and of Heinrich Köhler in Wiesbaden jointly with Tobias Huylmans.

In Summary
Both Tobias Huylmans and Jonas Hällström are well known in the philatelic community. Tobias Huylmans started working with Heinrich Köhler in 2007, became managing director of the company in 2019 and is one of the most respected philatelic experts in the German Expertisers Organisation (B.P.P.) and the Association Internationale des Experts en Philatelie (A.I.E.P.). Jonas Hällström has an extensive background in organised philately. His leadership capabilities were proven by him when organising the STOCKHOLMIA 2019 International Stamp Exhibition.

These appointments and changes are strategic moves to ensure the future leadership of the Group. They are being implemented now to prepare for a timeframe beyond the next decade and to ensure the continuation of the Group's strengths and developments aimed at customers and partners around the world.

Confirming that the last Erivan auction at Harmer was the end for that consignment. Erivan's heirs essentially own GPN. The timing of Epting's departure is likely no coincidence along with no future auctions scheduled. Perhaps the end for a legacy House with a convoluted history to say the least.

That's what I suspected.

GPN clearly owns the Harmer's brand, and they appear to be a mostly European-centric corporation. I guess the future all depends on what opportunities they see for the US market.

This reminds me a bit of Brigham, in Canada, I think? - it seems like whenever he decides to sell some stuff, an auction firm pops up and sells it, then vanishes.

Labor Day, Monday, September 4, 2023

With great enthusiasm for the future of Siegel Auction Galleries, I am thrilled to announce the hiring of three new employees, effective immediately.

Charles Epting, Alison Sullivan and Alyssa Baumgardner are now members of the team in New York. Their names should be familiar to many of our clients in the stamp world. Each has played a role in promoting the hobby and bringing important collections to market.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about all the extraordinary individuals who are now part of the Siegel firm.

SIEGEL INTERNATIONAL TEAM (IN DALLAS)

Charles Shreve, Director, Siegel International – a veteran of the trade, Charles Shreve is responsible for all of Siegel's worldwide auctions, as well as a key contributor to our sales of U.S. stamps and covers. He has earned numerous accolades for his role in organized philately, including the Lifetime Philatelic Achievement Award from the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.

Andrew Titley, VP, Siegel International – Andrew has considerable expertise in many of those most challenging areas of worldwide philately and postal history. He has been responsible for researching and producing the scholarly descriptions of the Magnolia collections of India, Middle East and (forthcoming) French Indochina. Andrew now serves on the board of The Philatelic Foundation.

Chris Anderson, Siegel International – Chris, another veteran of the trade, is responsible for cataloging a huge portion of Siegel's offerings of worldwide stamps and covers, as well as securing consignments. Chris has a rare combination of knowledge and integrity, and he represents Siegel at many national philatelic events.

NEW YORK PHILATELIC TEAM

John Zuckerman, Senior VP – John has been with the firm for the past 27 years and is responsible not only for cataloging important collections, but also handles management of operations and IT, including our website. John has been instrumental in helping many of the world's leading collectors build and manage their collections.

Corey Long, Senior VP – Corey joined Siegel in 2008 and has combined a deep knowledge of United States philately and postal history with his personal touch in helping clients buy and sell. Corey is a contributor to the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society and represents Siegel at many national philatelic events.

Charles Epting, VP – Charles Epting was CEO/President of H. R. Harmer in New York and was responsible for sales of the "Erivan" collection of United States and Confederate States. He has also created innovative online campaigns to promote philately and his sales. At Siegel, in addition to working on traditional auctions, Charles will help direct our effort to expand online auctions using our new BidBaller platform. He is also a new member of the board of The Philatelic Foundation.

NEW YORK ADMINISTRATION TEAM

Emily Singleton, VP, Operations – Emily is responsible for managing operations, including information resources, sale administration, client relations and logistics.

Samantha Aragon, VP, Financial – Samantha is responsible for managing financial administration, including receivables and payables, client accounts, sales tax reporting and internal reporting.

Greta Lickteig, Sale Administration – Greta is relatively new to the firm but has helped to improve logistics and daily operations. She is quickly becoming a familiar voice in assisting clients with their buying and selling activity.

Alice Nemoto, Sale Administration – last year Alice transitioned from part-time to full-time work and plays a vital role in auction administration, including phone bidding, invoicing and shipping.

James Thacker, Catalog Production – James is the person responsible for our catalog and marketing images, and he also handles some of our catalog production. James is an important part of the process that produces the high-fidelity scans seen on our website and in catalogs.

Our new members in New York:

Alison Sullivan, Financial Administration and Philatelic Assistant – Alison will work closely with Samantha in financial administration to maintain the high level of accuracy and reliability clients have come to expect. As an aspiring philatelic specialist, she will also work with the philatelic team in reviewing consignments and creating catalogs and online listings.

Alyssa Baumgardner, Sale Administration and Marketing – Alyssa will not only be part of the administration team, but she will also use her considerable skills and creativity to spearhead the Siegel firm's marketing and outreach to enhance visibility of our consignors' prized material and to attract new blood to the market. She will work closely with the philatelic team to find sales, consignments, individuals and items to "pitch" in the online world.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

There you have it. Thirteen of the best in the business, working together to move Siegel into the future. If you think that means I will be sitting at home reading or walking my dogs, you would be mistaken. After launching BidBaller and putting this team together, I could not be more excited about the future.

We are going to move philately beyond the traditional "stamp show" and "paper catalog" paradigm into a totally new collector experience. I spent the first 43 years of my career evolving and innovating, and I plan to spend the next 43 years doing the same. Of course, that means I will still be writing these emails at 104.

It's Labor Day, and there's no better way to honor the holiday than to honor my team. Thank you all. And thank you to our clients.

Regards,
Scott Trepel

Well, that didn't take long. Speaks volumes of their contributions, professionalism, and value (for lack of a better word) to the philatelic community.

I have nothing to base this on, but I suspect this has been in the works for a while. Please notice that 3 former Harmer employees have jumped over to Siegel all at once. Although it is none of my business, I would still love to know 'the story behind the story' on this!!

Congrats to the 3 of them. Siegel's is a leading philatelic company and anyone working there is working for the best.

In many industries and companies in the US, non-compete employment contracts are used to prevent uniquely and/or highly skilled employees from jumping ship to competitors.
