French Indochina:

Indo-China was a French colony established in 1887 in Southeast Asia. The colony was a federation consisted from Cambodia, Laos and three Vietnamese regions, Tonkin, Annam and Cochin-China (today Vietnam). A French Governor-General headed a federal-like central government, but was under direct control of France, which retained authority over foreign affairs, finance and defense of the colony.

The colony covered 750,000 sq. km. and had a population of 24 millions. Principal cities were Saigon, Hanoi, Haiphong, Phnom-Penh and Vientiane.

After the fall of France to the Nazi Germany during World War II, the French Indo-China colony was administered by Vichy France and was under Japanese supervision until a short period of full Japanese control between March and August 1945.

Beginning in May 1941, the Viet Minh, a Vietnamese communist armed movement, began a revolt against the French rulers known as the first Indo-China War. In 1949-50, in an attempt to retain her holdings, France recognized Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam as semi-independent states within the French Union, but retained financial and defense control. The war continued and end with France military defeat in 1954. The subsequent Geneva agreement brought an end to the French rule of Indo-China and the establishment of the independent states of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
