Philatelic Foundation Looking For Experts

Many years ago I was taught that the true definition of a philatelic expert is someone who knows where to look it up.

I always understood that an expert was someone working more than 100 miles from home.

PS: Really enjoyed the article on expertise. I think he's on a right track.

More experts are needed because of father time.

At this point, experts would need to be proactively trained rather than waiting for them. Of course, some aspects come with experience.

Lot of people like to call themself "experts " because they know how to read a catalog or find a website they can link too. But where are the one's who build their field of expertize , they have the reference library and have spend years building their own collections of both real stamps and forgeries .
They need to spend years buying material and building on the shoulders of previous experts ,haveing the material in front of them

Simple answer you don't have the material in front of you, your not a expert . .

The important thing is seeing vast quantities of material; it's not always essential to own all of it. It really depends on the area and country in question. For some, owning everything is the only way possible. However some have access to large reference collections so direct ownership is less of a requirement.

In my experiences with Stanley Gibbons I learned they have a vast reference collection where the stamps have literally been pasted down in books. No thought has ever been given to the value of the stamps or that they might need to be sold in future.

The PF reference collection is hinged, not pasted down.

Cannot agree with this statement because it boils down to "money equals proficiency". Nothing could be further from the truth IMO. Access to information and being capable of applying that information to the subject matter is key. What advantage would owning fake overprints have over a thousand images of the same overprints with detailed annotation? How would you know the ones you purchased were fake if you did not use online/published information in the first place? (chicken or the egg) Besides, making money the primary qualification is so exclusionary to a hobby that strives to be inclusionary in order to survive. That being said it is invaluable for organizations like the PF to have reference material for those colors and papers that can mean huge financial deltas. Not to mention the expensive equipment that enables highly technical examination.
