Monday November 24, 2025  ST. HELENA NO 24 0?The stamp is a one-penny Edward VII issued in 1903. The (STAMPWORLD) catalogue number is 39. When this stamp was issued, the Crown Colony was economically recovering from the loss of ships visiting the island after the Suez Canal opened decades earlier. The Boer War provided some relief with the stationing of British troops on the island to guard the POW camp for Boer prisoners.

Re: Stora Essingen, (the name is without "l") November 21
Stora means large and there is also a Lilla Essingen which means small. They are two islands located within the boarders of Stockholm, southwest of the most central parts of the city. The post office was opened in 1931 and was than named only Essingen. But when Lilla Essingen also got an office on Nov 1 1938 the name was changed to Stora Essingen. So your stamp is from the first month for this name. On Jan 1 1959 the name was changed to Stockholm 48, and on Jan 31 1990 the office was closed |

Thursday, November 27, 2025  A one-penny postal stationery cut square of a card dated ST. HELENA 27 NO 99. On November 27, 1899, St. Helena was a British territory actively involved in the Second Boer War, with the Eastern Telegraph Company laying underwater cables to facilitate military communications. The island was also serving as a POW camp for Boer prisoners, and its economy was beginning to show the financial benefits of this, with government revenue increasing substantially.  The map shows British cable lines in 1902. |
