Thanks everyone for posting your Yemen and Aden stamps. Here are my favourites, from the first issue of the kingdom in 1926: SG 2 mint: SG 2 used: SG 3 used: I've posted these here a few years ago, I believe back in 2019, and I hope you don't mind seeing them again. |

This is another great thread you started with lots of fascinating items and historical background. It's a pleasure to go through these pages.
Perfect example why SCF is the best stamp board by far.

Nigel, thank you very much for posting early Kingdom of Yemen stamps. I like the very clear Sana'a postmarks. lithograving, agree with you ___________________ The Yemen Arab Republic (YAR), commonly known as North Yemen or Yemen (Sana#701;a), was formed in 1962, when a coup in the capital Sana'a overthrow the monarchy and proclaim a republic. It existed until its unification with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) in 1990, in the northwestern part of what is now Yemen. In the first year after the coup, YAR used Kingdom stamps overprinted "Yemen Arab Republic" in Arabic and Y.A.R. Here is an example of overprinted stamps. Later, permanent stamps were issued until 1990. Here is a set shows daily life and Yemenite costumes. The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, known as South Yemen was a Socialist country in South Arabia that existed in what is now southeast Yemen from 1967 until its unification with the Yemen Arab Republic in 1990. South Yemen's origins can be traced to 1874 with the creation of the British Colony of Aden and the Aden Protectorate, which consisted of two-thirds of present-day Yemen. Stamps of South Yemen were issued in 1968 to 1990. North Yemen and South Yemen unified on 22 May 1990 to form the present-day Republic of Yemen. I think, according to online catalogues, that Yemen stopped issue stamps since 2013. If true, I assume its because the political situation and the Houthi control of large part of Yemen. Here are stamps from the first year of unification. |

The Gilbert and Ellice Islands were a British protectorate from 1892 and colony from 1916 until 1976. The Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony ceased to exist on 1 January 1976 and the separate crown colonies of Gilbert Islands (later Kiribati) and Tuvalu came into existence. The first stamps of G&E were Fijian stamps overprinted "GILBERT & ELLICE PROTECTORATE" and issued in 1911. The first permanent set of G&E Islands stamps was issued together with the overprinted Fijian stamps in 1911. The last set of stamps issued for G&E Islands on September 22, 1975. |

A referendum was held in December 1974 to determine whether the Gilbert Islands and the Ellice Islands should each have their own administration. When the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony was dissolved on January 1, 1976, the Gilbert Islands and Tuvalu (formerly the Ellice Islands) became separate Crown colonies. Tuvalu gained independence on October 1, 1978, and the Gilbert Islands gained independence and were renamed Kiribati on July 12, 1979. The first set of the Gilbert Island crown colony was G&E definitive set overprinted "THE GILBERT ISLANDS", issued in 1976. Here are three stamps from the set. The first permanent stamps issued for use in Gilbert Islands celebrating the separation of the colony. The flag of Gilbert Islands. The last set issued for use in the Gilbert Islands crown colony on January 15, 1979. |

The Viet Minh, a nationalist coalition founded by Ho Chi Minh in 1941, initially sought Vietnam's independence from French colonial rule. During World War II, they fought Japanese occupiers and, after Japan's surrender, seized Hanoi and declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945. A decade-long war with France followed, ending with the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The Geneva Accords then divided Vietnam into communist North Vietnam and anti-communist South Vietnam, setting the stage for further conflict. During 1945-1946, the new government overprinted Indo-Chinese stamps for use by the Viet Minh forces and in their controlled area. The common overprinted inscriptions are "Viet Nam Dan Chu Cong Hoa" ("Democratic Republic of Viet Nam") and "Viet Nam - Doc Lap – Tu do – Hanh phuc" (Viet Nam - Independence, Freedom, Happiness). Usually, the colony name INDOCHINE is covered by black strip overprint. Besides the overprinted stamps, only two sets of stamps featuring Ho Chi Minh were issued, the only permanent stamps produced for the Viet Minh forces. |

Raising the red flag at Dien Bien Phu The Geneva Accords included provisions for all-Viet-Nam elections. Only one party was going to win those, so the government in Saigon declined to implement the agreement, |

Many thanks, GeoffHa, for extra information and the photo. It is an iconic photo of Bien Bien Phu battle and appears on many Vietnamese stamps. ________________ Italian Somalia (Italian: Somalia Italiana) was a protectorate and later colony of the Kingdom of Italy in present-day Somalia between years 1889-1936. In 1936, the region was integrated into Italian East Africa as the Somalia Governorate. This would last until Italy's loss of the region in 1941, during the East African campaign of World War II. Italian Somalia then came under British military administration until 1950, when it became a United Nations trusteeship, the Trust Territory of Somalia under Italian administration. On 1 July 1960, the Trust Territory of Somalia united with the former British Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.Stamps of Italy issued in 1930 overprinted "Somalia" for use in Italian Somalia. |

Not a stamp, but a map supplied by the Ajman Philatelic Agency to the magazine "World Stamps Incorporating First Day Cover" February/March 1967. Befitting its status as a premier stamp-issuing authority, Manama is bang in the middle, with an arrow pointing at it. |

Thanks, Flightle_Bee, for the map. I didn't know Ajman had an agency in the USA. Trucial states are real "dead" countries and should be mentioned in this thread. Not sure I have stamps from all seven of them. |

"Homeland states" also known as Bantustans, were a system of reservations established by the South African government during the apartheid era to segregate Black Africans by ethnicity and assign them to specific territories. These territories were designated as "independent" or "self-governing" states, but this status was not recognized internationally. The homeland system was a key component of apartheid, aiming to preserve white minority rule by denying Black South Africans full citizenship and political. On April 27, 1994, all of the homelands were reincorporated into South Africa, after the first post-apartheid elections. South Africa issued stamps for use in 4 homeland states. Here they are with stamps show local culture and traditions. Ciskei - an homeland state for the Xhosa people-located in the southeast of South Africa. Stamps were issued during 1981-1994. Transkei - officially the Republic of Transkei, an homeland state in the southeastern region of South Africa. Stamps were issued during 1976-1994. Bophuthatswana - (meaning "gathering of the Tswana people"), officially the Republic of Bophuthatswana, was an homeland state in Northern South Africa. Stamps were issued during 1977-1994. Venda - a homeland state for the Venda people, in North South Africa. Stamps were issued during 1979-1994. |
