Binders and album supplies are a tough business with punishing economics. Relatively few buyers, high fixed costs and overhead, supply chain troubles, etc. One way to try and sidestep some of these is utilizing the just-in-time (on-demand) model, as Amos has tried, but that leaves you particularly vulnerable to said supply chain issues and often results in delays and cancelations, which ticks off customers and sends them into the hands of Steiner pages and 3 ring binders and therefore your market shrinks further.

Remember, these things came about during a time when department stores had stamp counters and collecting was a very popular hobby. With so many collectors and so many sales, you spread your costs around a lot more effectively. Those days are long gone; most newcomers to the hobby (few that there are, on a relative basis) are just opting for either Steiner pages or some other DIY method.

One option is to move production to a lower cost place, like China. I guess Amos hasn't done that, but it sounds like Lighthouse has, if they're sourcing Vario binders from China. I'm personally wary of plastics and I think these have the potential to do more harm than even acid-containing paper, so I'd steer clear.
