lithograving - Excellent. Here are images of a couple of the USA stamps that Yves Baril engraved during the 1990s. - nethryk João Rodrigues Cabrilho (Spanish: Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo), Portuguese explorer (c.1499 - 1543) who worked on behalf of Spain, designed by American pin-up artist Ren Wicks (1911-1998), and issued on September 8, 1992, Scott No. 2704. Lots of lithography on this one, but Baril's engraving still shines through. Dr. Allison Davis (1902-83), American anthropologist and educator, designed by Chris Calle, and issued on February 1, 1994, Scott No. 2816. |

nethryk - I had no idea that Yves Baril engraved those 2 US stamps. I'm curious, where do you get all your info regarding the engravers of US stamps? I borrowed the 2008 Scott Specialized from the library but it does not list the engravers. It does say that the Cabrillo stamp Sc 2704 was printed by The Press and J.W. Fergusson & Sons for Stamp Ventures and the Davis Sc 2816 printed by Stamp Ventures. So, Baril moonlighted for these companies while he was still the chief engraver for Canadian Bank Note Co. |

lithograving - A very attractive set! I especially like St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child (#833). Moreover, I really like the whole subtopic of sculpture on engraved stamps.
Scott US Specialized is pretty good as far as it goes, and it does an excellent job of listing stamp designers; but my workhorse reference book for engraving and production details about USA stamps is Linn's World Stamp Almanac, Millennium (6th) Edition, published in 2000. In fact, Linn's has published a number of good books about USA stamps, particularly those written by USA stamp expert Gary Griffith. And yes, I guess old Yves allowed himself a few cross-border "flings" before his retirement in 1996. - nethryk |

That Linn's World Stamp Almanac sounds like it has a wealth of info.
You would figure that a so called Specialized catalogue like Scott should have included the engravers. |

Jules Piel (1882-1978), winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, engraved more than 150 stamps for France, plus scores of others for the French community and other Francophone countries. Here are images of some stamps that demonstrate Piel's design and engraving skills in depictions of sculptures of children. - nethryk This semi-postal stamp was designed after a 1777 bust of young Alexandre Brongniart by French neoclassical sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), and issued by France on February 8, 1952, Scott No. B255, Y&T No. 876. This stamp was designed after "L'Enfant à l'Aiglon" (Child with a young eagle), a bronze Roman-era statue that was unearthed in 1906 in Tazoult/Lambèse, Algeria, and issued for use in Algeria on February 8, 1952, Scott No 242. This set of four semi-postal stamps was designed after sculptures in the "Fountain of the Seasons" (1739–45) in the rue de Grenelle, Paris, by French sculptor Edmé Bouchardon (1698-1762), and issued by France issued on December 19, 1949, Scott Nos. B244-47, Y&T Nos. 859-62. Spring Summer Autumn Winter |

Here are images of some other examples of his high quality workmanship, three of which Monsieur Piel also designed, selected from both early and late in his long career. - nethryk Jean Jaurès, socialist politician, issued by France on July 30, 1936, Scott No. 313, Y&T No. 318. Wheat harvest, semi-postal designed by Piel, and issued by France on December 2, 1940, Scott No. B104, Y&T No. 466. In my opinion this is one of Yves Baril's best work. The face is so very detailed, a lot of work must have gone into this. George Vanier, Governor-General. Canada 1967 Scott 474 Lettering engraved by Donald J Mitchell |

One of the USA's top vignette engravers from the late 1940s though the early 1960s was Richard M. Bower. In two parts, here are images of a bevy of "Bower beauties" that demonstrate the depth and range of his talent. - nethryk Part 1 (Lettering by J.S. Edmondson on all stamps except Scott No. 1023, lettering by Robert J. Jones). Francis Scott Key, issued on August 9, 1948, Scott No. 962. Washington Territory, issued on March 2, 1953, Scott No. 1019. Sagamore Hill, issued on September 14, 1953, Scott No. 1023. I recall visiting TR's home/museum once during my teens. Previously we've seen on these pages works of prolific engravers who worked on dozens, hundreds and the master Slania of course who engraved over 1000 stamps. Here is one from Inga-Karin Eriksson who only engraved this stamp but has designed 60 Swedish Stamps over the years. Sweden 1982 Scott 1401 From Sweden Post Stamp Bulletin Quote: Stamp designer: Inga-Karin Eriksson Inga-Karin Eriksson's stamps as well as her method of depicting different motifs are held in high esteem. Precise and detailed, her pictures contain wonderful opportunities for the viewer to embark on an exploration into the busy worlds she creates. This was evident at the very least by the vote for 2008 Stamp of the Year when five of the ten most popular stamps were created in her studio on the island of Södermalm in Stockholm. The winner was the stamp depicting a heavily ladened Midsummer table. In 1988, her Dan Andersson stamp was also named Stamp of the Year. Inga-Karin Eriksson belonged to a group of twelve gifted young graphic artists that in 1979 were accepted at the unique School of Engraving at the Royal University College of Fine Arts. Part of the final project was to design a sketch for the 1982 Swedish Europa stamp. The winners were Lars Sjööblom and Göran Österlund. Inga-Karin engraved Göran Österlund's sketch of a map, but it is the only stamp engraving to her name. "Illustration and design was more fun and offered more variety than engraving," she says. With the addition of Waterlilies, Inga-Karin Eriksson has designed almost 60 stamps. She has also designed currency notes at Tumba Bruk and illustrated and designed books and posters. Her most well-known poster is the one she drew for Björn & Benny's musical, "Kristina från Duvemåla". For this stamp-like picture she received an award in a competition for best theatrical poster. |

As mentioned in the article above, School of Engraving student Lars Sjööblom's design & engraving was picked for the Swedish 1982 Europa stamp portraying Anders Celsius. During Sjööblom's nearly 30 year career he has engraved over 400 stamps. Below is his first. Engraver : Lars SjööblomScott 1402 Booklet Scott 1402a |
