Non-figurative Art motif

This was supposed to be the first stamp printed in 3 colours on the new Goebel press but according to an article by Erik Jensen, this is what happened.

Quote:

In 1968, the postal service arranged a competition for drawing Denmark's first three-coloured stamp. Professor Richard Mortensen won with a so-called non-figurative motif which despite great efforts turned out to be impossible to print in an artistically reasonable way. The colours ran together.

The winning stamp should have been issued on 10th April 1969, but it had to be redrawn with "respect zones" of one millimetre in order to avoid that the colours ran together. Consequently, the edition had to be postponed until 10th November 1969 and in the meantime another three-coloured stamp was issued on 12th June 1969. It became the first of its kind, because in Povl Christensen's stamp on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the Danish flag the colours did not run together.

nethryk - Thank you very much for adding three more names (and even trying to obtain their respective years of birth - so difficult to come by!), those of the designer Dušan Lucic (1937- ) and the engravers Dragiša Andric (1942- ) and Dušan Matic (1939?- ), to the lists of ex-Yugoslavian designers/engravers.

Your capability to search for biographical data via the Internet and your worldwide contacts with like-minded collectors are most appreciated.

It helps to know at least what age group people belong to.

biglff - Hi, John, I was very happy to see you were able to successfully reorganize Czechoslovakia. Thank you very much. Just nice!

I've noticed that Croatia (with one entry only) appears on your list of countries, so you could easily shift three more Croatia stamps (those with tabs) from page 4 of Germany (items 2, 4 and 7) to that heading so as to keep the lonely Croatian miniature sheet company. Thank you again for being so obliging!

If you cared for advice how to restructure Germany, just do not hesitate to ask.

lithograving - Thank you very much for posting the splendid images of the Danish stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slania.

Not only was he a fantastic engraver of stamps based on photographs where he excelled in rendering volumes by means of engraver's elements of expression, a task far more difficult as photographs show much less character than pen/pencil drawings and therefore the volumes have to be imagined by the artist's expert eye but he could also interpret designer's conception most faithfully as witnessed by your images of Slania's works, from the very simple linear ones to those most complicated, e.g. the designs by Jane Muus.

Florian , I'm glad you liked Slania's Danish works and as usual I appreciate your great insight
in what goes into the making of these small works of art.

And these stamps are small as were most of the Danish commemoratives
up to the eighties.
It's amazing how Slania could produce such work on a surface
only 23.60 x 31.08 mm ( 0.93" x 1.22" )

I partly agree with you on the two portraits designed by Jane Muus
but somehow the stamps would have looked better IMO
had they been printed via offset or photogravure.

Actually I believe that the dark brown Niels Stensen stamp would have looked
better if printed by typography since it reminds me so much of old woodcuts.

Then again that's a mute point since the Danish Printing
Works at that time could only print via recess engraving.

I wonder if the designer was happy with the way they (the engraver and the printer) represented her work?

Reminds me of the story you shared with us about how the wife
of a Czechoslovakian stamp designer who was upset as to how
the engraver interpreted her husbands work.
