Thanks for posting the Churchill stamp, Adrian. I have that set coming this week, as far as I can see, the only engraved stamps Jersey ever did. I hadn't looked at who did them yet so it will be good to double my stock of Doubtfire stamps.

It's great when something causes me to look deeper at an engraver, even when it is something as tragic as the engraver's death.

This stamp has no engraver attributed in Gibbons but it is another Stanley Doubtfire work, and a beautiful portrait at that.

The information comes from Adrian's site and as he is probably too modest to blow his own trumpet, I'll do it for him.

http://stampengravers.blogspot.com....stanley.html

Doubtfire's list is here and includes the portrait of the Queen on the banknotes of several countries.

It also brings up another mystery around the Greek Royal Family set 5D value.

My catalogues have this as engraved by A. Tassos which was apparently a pseudonym for Anastasios Alevizos (thanks, Nethryk). Adrian lists this as being by Stanley Doubtfire with the source being The International Engraver's Line by Gene Hessler. As most of Hessler's source material was interviews with engravers still living at the time, I would expect that he is correct.

FRANCE Scott B88 & B88A 1939/40

Designer & Engraver : Antonin Delzers

Honoré de Balzac
For the unemployed intellectuals.
Same designs and colour but different rates,

The scans don't do justice to what these stamps really look like
The colours of these and others issued by France in the late thirties
are very vibrant and jump right out at you.
Over the years I've seen a lot of engraved stamps from different countries and engravers but
these French ones are truly stunning.
I just wish that the scans would show them as they really are.
