nethryk, the engraving style of those Dutch celebrities engraved by Engelien Reitsma-Valença is very different compared to these Austrian ones here by Alfred Nefe (born 1923)

Scott 858 1970

Josef Schöffel, journalist and politician who saved the Vienna Woods from being privatized & deforested

Scott 859 1970

Printing : 1 colour engraving and 1 colour photogravure

St Klemens Maria Hofbauer, hermit and later a priest of the Redemptorist congregation.Canonized
in 1909

Scott 882 1970

Alfred Cossmann, copper plate engraver and designer.

Cossmann designed and engraved a couple of Express stamps including these two.
These typography stamps were first issued in 1917 and then reissued in 1919 for the German Austrian Republic over printed Deutschösterreich . He also designed Austrian banknotes in the late twenties.

Scott QE5-6

Scott 915 1972

Printing : 1 colour engraving, 2 colour offset

Franz Grillparzer, was a well known writer of dramas, much beloved in Austria. He also wrote the oration for Ludwig van Beethoven's funeral.

lithograving - Unquestionably, each artist brings his or her own distinctive style to stamp design. In recent years I have found that my interest in the role of the artists/designers of postage stamps has grown so much that it now rivals my long-held interest in stamp engravers.

Here are images of four examples of the work of Hungarian graphic artist and engraver György Lengyel on stamps issued by Hungary. The first two stamps were both designed and combined engraved by Lengyel and lithography, while the portraits of medical pioneers were designed by Hungarian illustrator, print maker, and graphic designer János Kass (1927-2010), and engraved by Lengyel. Quite a difference, I would say!

- nethryk

Silver teapot, Pest, 1846, issued on December 28, 1988, Scott No. 3162.

Silver sugar bowl, Pest, 1822, issued on December 28, 1988, Scott No. 3164.

Galen of Pergamon (AD 129–c. 200), a prominent Roman (of Greek ethnicity) physician, surgeon and philosopher, issued on December 29, 1989, Scott No. 3213.

Paracelsus (1493-1541), a German-Swiss Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer, and general occultist, issued on December 29, 1989, Scott No. 3214.

In one of the previous posts florian mentioned some Austrian art
stamps he liked.

Here are some of the Modern Art in Austria series most of which
were printed combination 1 colour engraving and multicolour
photogravure. The majority were engraved by Wolfgang Seidel (1946- )
It began in 1975 with a work by Friedensreich Hundertwasser (December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000) called The Spiral Tree.
Hundertwasser was probably the most famous Austrian artist in
the second half of the 20th Century.

Scott 1029

1 colour engraving, multicolour photogravure, 1 colour typography (the green dots which really don't show up well in the scan )

lithograving and nethryk - Thank you both for showing those wonderful images of stamps in a variety of designers' and engravers' styles ranging from Russia via Austria to the Netherlands.

lithograving - What I meant by the Power Station stamp was the 1996 Moderne Kunst by Reinhard Artberg. Thank you very much.

Ernst Fuchs: The mood which the design is conceived in, the expression on the girl's face, her eyes and the curve of her lips appeal to me.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser: I can see a giant lime-tree in full fragrant bloom, against the blue skies, the trunk with its deep roots in the grassy soil. (Must have a look around for this stamp.)

Arik Brauer: Lieber Augustin's happy-go-lucky optimism. A fine design. Thanks for the link to Oh du lieber Augustin. Great indeed!

Wolfgang Hutter: Beauty expressed very sensitively throughout.

Gottfried Kumpf: The mood of the place through lines and colours.

Karl Korab: The evening's magic window near mid-autumn or rather around All Souls' Day.

Great stamps! Thank you very much.
