I just came across this Thelonious Monk stamp from 1956, and thought I would share it. Great design, no?
That is only part of the story.
Here is the rest of the story. I was flipping through some old jazz albums, and I ran across
The Unique Thelonious Monk again. I hadn't thought about it in quite some time.
This stamp is used as the cover design for the 1956 album, the second album that Thelonious Monk released on the Riverside label. It is a great album, but overshadowed by the even greater albums to come (probably in part because it doesn't contain any original Monk tunes...it is made up of standards).
At one point, Riverside distributed promotional sheets of 100 stamps, but I don't have one, and this scan will have to do, for now.
(Note the value tablets, if you haven't already.)
