I just came across this Thelonious Monk stamp from 1956, and thought I would share it. Great design, no?

That is only part of the story.

Here is the rest of the story. I was flipping through some old jazz albums, and I ran across The Unique Thelonious Monk again. I hadn't thought about it in quite some time.

This stamp is used as the cover design for the 1956 album, the second album that Thelonious Monk released on the Riverside label. It is a great album, but overshadowed by the even greater albums to come (probably in part because it doesn't contain any original Monk tunes...it is made up of standards).

At one point, Riverside distributed promotional sheets of 100 stamps, but I don't have one, and this scan will have to do, for now.

(Note the value tablets, if you haven't already.)

The greatest jazz pianist, I always remember his right foot alway jerking and tapping to the music. For those who have not had the pleasure of his music here is a small sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQaM-SqDqSY

I must admit to being a bit of a Jazz philistine,
I don't really understand it,
but that was nice, I esp like the brassy snare drum,
often heard in the early blues combos like Rice Miller
in King Biscuit Time.

I love Monk. One of the greatest jazz pianists the world has ever seen! Cjd, your scan has sparked my interest in Cinderellas! Are there any other jazz or modern musicians on Cinderella stamps?

Just found this on ebay.

Coltrane was another jazz giant whose stuff I just love.

BTW, as far as I know, this is just an album cover and I am not aware of any actual stamps or postal covers with same/similar images.
