We wander down the aisles of stamp exhibits at shows in awe..what does the non collector see ?? Perhaps he sees a nice arrangement of stamps...does he understand the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars that can go into creating it ? Does he see the CREATION that a collector has lovingly put together for his enjoyment and that of others ? I would say it has to be akin to publishing a book !!

...and brickbats to philately, and the status quo.

Ever since I have been collecting I have voiced disappointment exhibitors
do not, or cannot offer, even offer an A4 sheet in way of explanation
of their exhibit, broadcasting what their exhibit offers.
We go home with an ever dimmer recollection of their work.

Even at my stamp club, if collectors want kudos for their work
give us something to view and contemplate.
Most members dash for the tea urn and bickie barrel.

That would be a great idea, Rod, I'm sure most exhibitors could easily knock out a 1 page resume - although the costs of printing the sheets (we know the costs of ink!) might be prohibitive. At my first and only (so far) show, I asked and was given permission to take some pics. But that can only give a flavour. I would also like to have been able to contact a coupleof the exhibitors, as they had very particular material that interested me, and an email address would have been great.

I guess theres two sides to the story....the people I know who exhibit take great detail on their pages in way of explaination of an item...perhaps thats not the norm...i am sure that the judges are looking for some sort of written logic to the exhibit.

I am not doubting that Phil,
it's being able, as Stampgal suggests,
taking away some sort of brief resume of the work
to contemplate and consider.
One forgets a certain percentage of an image
almost immediately.

Maybe I picked Rod up wrong - what I was thinking of was something to take home that would be - for want of a better word - a souvenir, or reference for the exhibit. Certainly the exhibits themselves (OK - from my one stamp show!) are fascinating, detailed and logical. They don't need any additional notes, it would just be nice to take away some essence of them. After all, such an amount of time, effort, dedication and, yes, money goes into them, a takeaway sheet would give you more than the sometimes fleeting memories of their content.

My friend is having a very small initial printing I believe 30 copies of a book on his collection of covers from World War 2 Canadian prisoner of war camps... I would dearly like to have one(autographed of course) but priced at over $100 dollars it would be hard for me to swing it !

I think that a noncollector has to at least acknowledge the hours of research and detail involved in most exhibits. Heck, some collectors put as much time into their own album pages as some do on their exhibits.

I know I would like to make a good hi-res color copy of my route 66 collection to place on display at appropiate venues. That way I wouldn't have to worry or miss the original items.

Stamperdude I am betting that you will exhibit at some point in the future...there are people that ship their exhibits to Europe to display at shows...i imagine that takes quite a bit of nerve and insurance !!1

Hi

I thought the first page of an exhibit is supposed to tell what the rest of the exhibit is all about. Therefore, all that would be needed is a copy of the first page as a resume, or am I misunderstanding what one means by a "resume"?

OK Rodney, OZ dictionary update. What is a "bickie barrel"?
