The more we read about stamps the more we learn...if you look at the Scott specialized catalog of U.S. stamps it tells us the 5 cent prominent americans stamp depicting Washington scott 1283 was issued 2/22/1966 and re engraved and re issued as 1283b on 11/17/67. but does not explain why..to be continued

While reading through the encyclopedia of U.S. stamps and stamp collecting which T360 thoughtfully gifted me with I learned why the stamp was re issued. There were complaints that the original engraving was unflattering showing Washington as puffy faced and unshaven..zo on Nov. 17, 1967 a cleaned up version of our first president was issued scott 1283b..this led me to check my first day covers and sure enough I did have both versions !

Interesting info Phil. Now I need to check and see if I have any of them on covers or single.I love it when you guys find these neat little bit's of info and when ever I get things from Tom and he includes print out's of info concerning the material he has sent me. It really helps out a lot. Thanks to you guys and everyone else that takes the time to provide info for all us newbies. Yes I still consider myself a newbie, specially when you read profiles and see where some of you kind folks have been collecting for more then 30 years. I hope I can be around this world long enough to collect for half that length of time.

i am kind of a newbie myself when I see what some of the people I have rubbed shoulders with have been able to put together. I am not too big on what George Carlin would call "stuff" I have to look for a shirt with a collar if we go out...but STAMPS are different !!
