I have a 1c black on buff indian head Westervelt's Post local. Other than a 1c red on pink (144L9) on cover listed with Robert A. Siegel Auctions, I can't find much on this stamp other than it was in use in mid 1800s in Chester, NY. Can anyone help me to ID this one? https://www.stampcommunity.org/uplo...tervelt.jpegMarty

According to Scott's, there are many reprints and forgeries of all types and colours and several varieties other than those listed. So it will surely drop into one of those categories. But which one? |

With so many new and very knowledgeable members, I thought I'd resurrect this post and hope someone might now be able to ID it as genuine or forgery. |

Their are 2 Types of Forgeries of this Stamp. As well as Reprints. This is a Type "A" Forgery. The forger of Type "A" is unknown. Type "B" is the S.A. Taylor Forgery. The Type "B" is MUCH easier to distinguish as the Indian is missing His Earring. Yours can be noted as a Forgery the gap in the curve of the "P" in "Post". To keep it simple I'll just leave it as that. Their are also other faults as well.

Thank you both! Yes, Rod, I received no answer when I first posted this in 2009. Rev, that is not what I wanted to hear but at the same time, I am quite happy to have an answer. Interestingly, I had both of you in mind when I decided to resurrect this post. You have made my day and I hope you had fun researching this stamp. It now goes with my growing collection of fakes and forgeries, which fortunately is not growing very rapidly. |

Well, strealing someone else's design can't get more obvious than that! Is J.W. Scott the same Scott as in Scott catalogs? I recall having read somewhere Scott catalogs author was involved in producing bogus stamps. |

Quote: Is J.W. Scott the same Scott as in Scott catalogs? Yes! Quote: strealing someone else's design can't get more obvious than that! It is possible that it was not stolen in the way you would think. At the time the Indian was a popular design. "Indian Head" pennies, "Indian Head" Currency ($5 Silver cert. with Chief "Onepapa"), Indians being paraded into congress, etc. There were supply houses for type faces and printing materials. It is quite possible they were bought from the same supplier. Because that's what they had in stock. Or, Maybe your right and he stole the design. I guess we will never know for sure! |
