What do you think of the new stamp honoring the actress Bette Davis to be issued in 2008?

I just found this thread. I'm not really impressed with this stamp in particular, or with the series. I'm kinda old fashioned and believe stamps should honor someone or something of real importance. But what do I know? I'm just a useless old geezer unless my kids need money - then I'm useful! |

What?! Entertainers and ball players and comic book characters and Star Wars creatures aren't important? Would you go back to putting great leaders on stamps, like stuffy old inventors and scientists and explorers and astronauts and doctors and engineers and teachers and entrepreneurs? No one has ever heard of them, and they spent all their time working hard (boring). Seriously, I think the stamp program has gotten frivolous, but some of great film stars of the last century do deserve commemoration. Bette Davis was a very powerful actress who had a long and very successful career. I remember her best as Baby Jane Hudson in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" released 1962. Boy, she was scary! |

In my opinion, they could have found a better picture. One that wasn't so dark. Will it be a 41 cent stamp like the picture or will it be printed with the new increase? LeAnn

Hello everyone....
I have mixed feelings about this new stamp.......they could have found/created a better design, there has been quite a few very dark or black stamps lately. I personally don't really like them. But, movies and movie stars are a part of our history and culture, I am not opposed to the idea of celebrating them on stamps. On the other hand, the Star Wars and Disney stamps strike me as pure commercialism and they should not be connected with our postage.
Also, in 1962, Baby Jane gave me nightmares.

Hi guys
Though I agree with LeAnn that the stamp is a bit dark I still like it. But I'm an old romantic at heart.

Bette Davis still scares me! I got chills looking at that "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" photo! I won't be buying her stamp, plus it's too dark. I agree, there are better images out there of her.

I agree the photo could have been better but I do think she was one of the greats on the screen. I would buy the stamp. She could keep John Wayne company for me |

Steer that band wagon over my direction so that I can jump on it. That picture leaves some to be desired for me, too dark, and man what a dreadful portrail, it could have been alot better. As for going and getting it?? Don't expect to see me standing in the lines at the local P.O. for it. Only way I will get it is if it comes on a cover in the mail. |

I think this stamp is kinda creepy. Don't you think they could have picked a better picture to put on there? |

I will more than likely buy it. I do agree that it is not the best portrait and a bit dark. On the other hand a dark stamp does jump out on a white envelope. Then again this stamp may jump out and scare someone away from stamp collecting. Also, I have never seen a movie with her. I do like the song Bette Davis Eyes, however. |

LaSwabbbie:
Ths is a great stamp. Just like the Sinatra stamp (I got a sheet of those).
The United States' biggest export is their culture. Not just Americans, but people all over the world watch American movies and TV programmes. That's why those stamps are popular.
I like the Bette Davis stamp.

Quote: Will you be telling us you've never had Pizza or a hamburger ?? I've seen Bette Davis movies (though after The Dark Secret of Harvest Home would never watch another), grill hamburgers all summer long, but have NEVER had pizza. Not even a bite! My father never ate pizza either, but he's gone so maybe I'm now the only person left in America who has never touched the stuff! |
