I came across a set of recently issued China stamps on a topic called "Romance of three kingdoms". These are three BIG souvenir sheets. while the first two are affordable the third one in the set is quite pricey. Any idea as to why only that particular stamp is so costly ? (i want to know its future prospects in terms of investment )

These stamps are not a single set. China has issued 5 series of "Romance of the three kingdoms".
The 3 yuan minisheet (SG MS3588) was issued in 1988 as part of the 1st series.
The 5 yuan minisheet (SG MS3948) was issued in 1994 as part of the 4th series.
The 800 fen minisheet (SG MS4319) was issued in 1998 as part of the 5th series.

Don't know the answer to your question - perhaps there were fewer sheets issued in the original series.
