When I was 7 or 8, I remember cutting the "ragged" edges off a pile of old stamps my grandfather had given me. He said, no your supposed to leave those on. I've always felt guilty for doing that. But there's more than just leaving the edges on and this looks like the place to find out what stamp collecting is about. I go to my first stamp club meeting in two days. I like U.S. 1930s, 40s, 50s political history. So maybe there's a way to collect stamps around that interest area. Thank you all for the help you give one another. Gary

Hi Gary and welcome to the Forum. If you have any questions just post them here on the board. Someone will be along to answer them. We love to see pics, so post away.

Ah, the lessons we learn. Welcome and I hope you enjoy your 1st stamp club meeting. There are some great stamps in the timeframe you collect and most of them are relatively inexpensive. |

Welcome aboard Gary. I was born in Oak Park and grew up in Cicero. What part of Illinois are you from? Steve |

Thanks for the welcomes. Steve, I'm retired living in Sycamore, Illinois. Born and raised south of Chicago in Manteno, Kankakee County. This is great to be in a community with people all over the world. It's like getting to meet the best of the best. I had no idea that there were so many facets to stamp collecting. Why didn't I get into this years ago? But now I can do it full time. Again, so many people to be in a hobby with, is amazing. Gary |

Quote: I had no idea that there were so many facets to stamp collecting. Gary, You've made a wise choice in joining the SCF. I'm continually amazed at how much I've been able to pick up just in the two short months since I signed up. And most importantly, it seems there is always someone who is able to point you in the right direction! Steve |

Gary Did you also tape them on a sheet of paper for safe keeping? It is the most logical and obvious solution for most children Welcome to SCF. You'll find lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks here. Most can answer questions and give you pointers, but it's also great you've found a stamp club. Let us know your impressions after your first meeting. KirkS |

You truly have found a great group of folks in this 'little' family. Your framework for your proposed focus sounds absolutely fascinating and can be approached from a number of angles. I hope you enjoy your stamp club. Good ones can be very good and some just don't seem to move at all. Be patient and remember like all else you can only reap what you sow. |

Gary and Steve, I am reside in Springfield. I was in that area a couple weeks ago, traveling Route 66 from Grant Park to the State Capitol. I also picked up a postmark in Cicero for my 66 collection. We also have a member from Berwyn as well, but I haven't seen him post recently. |

stamperdude, I've traveled the old Rt. 66 hundreds of times. It would be great to have a postmark from all those little towns across the state. Good luck in your efforts. Gary |
