In my book, if a stamp is not perfectly printed off or has any type of error than it is a collectible. The printer will catch it one way or another. If the stamps get out to circulation than all the better for the collector. Some of the errors will be valuable and that depends on a lot of factors. Look at the U.S. air mail with the upside down plane. (Sorry U.S. collectors. Forgot just the exact name for that stamp.)

I know that it's for the thrill of seeing if the seller (or forger) of the stamp can get away with it, but really. I believe that the fates stepped in and made the error for a reason. Silly? Maybe, but it's like you're willing to put out the big bucks for an original painting and knowingly getting a fake and accepting it. Wanting to willingly own a reperferd stamp doesn't make sense to me, but then again banana and mayo sandwiches just never made sense to me either.

The problem with alterations to classic stamps is that is makes a mess in the market place. The forgers actual go through a high tec process to get their work done. They often have invested in all types of special equipment that range from perforation devices to re-manufacturing old hand cancellation stamps.

In the end some get caught but they take a lot of money from unknowing stamp collectors. In addition they make a mess of the market.

My advice has always been if it looks to good to believe then it probably is. The key problem is that you will have over paid for stamps and that is theft even if you don't mind alternated stamps.

There are a few schools of thoughts on this issue. There is a large group that thinks these stamps should be destroyed and another group that thinks they should be permanently marked on the back so it doesn't hurt the market place.

Fakery is nothing new. I saw a bunch of fakes today that were at least 80 years old. Some quite convincing.
