Good Morning Stamp Community

I recently purchased a booklet stamp from Natal, which seems to be a training stamp any additional info would be great.

They have one for sale at http://www.rhodesia.co.za/natal01.html and describe it as - 1907 Booklet stamp KEVII 1d rose-carmine overprinted 'NOT FOR USE'. (see SG 147a) I dont have a SG catalog handy so can't check what 147a is.

The stamp

Better image from rhodesias website (I will scan mine when it arrives)

I wonder if there are any other Natal stamps with a similar overprint - Rod, have you got any in that gargantuan database of yours?

Drew

Update found on the web :

'Not-For-Use'

About 1910, a Natal 1d. King's Head multiple CA watermark, S.G. 147, appeared printed over in black with the words 'NOT FOR USE' in three boxes within a design covering nearly the whole stamp. It is from the last pane of Natal's booklet, issued in 1909 or 1910. The booklet contained, because of the cancellation of this one stamp, 2s. 5d. in postage. It sold for 2s. 6d.; the additional penny paid for the booklet. The entire booklet pane, showing this blacked-out stamp, is a choice piece.

A quick scan through Gibbons doesn't show any other such panes. Gibbons does list two booklets for Natal: the 2/6 booklet that this pane came from (at £2000!) from 1907, and a 2/7 booklet from the year before. Obviously, the odd amount for the booklet wasn't popular, so the post office reduced the price to 2/6 by blacking out one of the stamps, to accommodate the extra 1d for the booklet. (The 2/7 booklet is also listed at £2000 in Gibbons, so it would seem that paying 1d for a booklet, however it was done, wasn't a popular move.)

I failed on all counts StampStudy, never seen them before.
Not in my semi specialist Gibbons either,
spent an hour Googling without success.

The information here is all I have (and saved)

From a period of time when a currency,
had a well defined and understood value.

I wonder how many readers on this newgroup could quote todays
value of a simple oil change in their vehicle?
$100 $150 $200?

Now I hunt to find an image of the complete pane - I'll see what my South African Colour Catalogue has to say about it when I get home tonight.

Thank you 22crows! for some reason I expected the "not for use" stamp to be on the lower right. It does make sense to be on the top left now that I think about it. I tried to find the price it went for ?

Current (2011) Gibbons cat. for the booklet pane is £375. It appears to be moving along nicely - as it should, for such an interesting object.
