Would anyone care to comment on what stamp is shown here?

As far as I can tell the only choices are a 135, 146, 157 or 183. I tend to think it's a 183, but even at that I note there are two varieties referred to in Scott Specialized, as "vermillion" or "orange vermillion".

Based on the stamp color charts recently posted, it doesn't look like "vermillion" to me; on the other hand, the charts don't show an "orange vermillion" color chip.

Any ideas?

It is either 178 (Continental) or 183 (American) depending on the paper. 178 is on yellowish wove paper, 183 on soft porous paper.

I find the philately section of the Smithsonian's Arago site useful for U.S. color comparisons.

Edit: If you have one in your collection for comparison, Scott 827 is "vermillion."

Thanks for the guide. Upon closer look, the stamp does have a slight yellowish look (but not sure if its from age or the yellowish paper variety). The "vermillion" color does closely match Scott #827, so that is without question. Now I just have to figure out if it is a 178 or 183.

The 178 was issued in 1875 with about 112M printed. The color was vermilion and they were printed by Continental on a yellowish woven type of paper.

The 183 was issued in 1878 with about 547M printed. The color was vermilion to a orange vermilion. These were printed by American using both Continental and American plates. The paper type was a soft porous.
