Also, I find that each new collection holds my attention for a little shorter time-span before I'm thinking of moving on to something new.

KirkS - I just realized that your statement is true for me also. Yikes!

As with so many, I started out collecting everything. Then I shifted my focus to U.S. only and have further refined it to pre-1940 and bureau precancels. The reason that I changed was when I started sorting a bunch of Washington-Franklins I was forced to start learning. This really peaked my interest in U.S. stamps. Since then I have tried to learn as mush as possible about early U.S. But the great thing about collecting is it is not about what you collect but how much you enjoy it.

We have a law here that you cannot have your power/gas/oil disconnected after Oct 20ish for whatever reason (to keep stamp collectors from freezing to death). Considering that you are probably a little further north of here, similar rules probably apply.

smauggie.. nice.. so the welfare people can stop paying their bills and get free power/gas/oil.. then in the spring they move to another welfare project and sign up under a different name... lord knows there is usually 20-30 people in one place anyway.

I purchase since the hunt is a big part of the fun

I spend hours looking for good deals. In fact I spend more time hunting than stamping if I have money of course. Now I have 4 country collections and 4 topical collections. I try to buy mnh stamps in quantity. For example last summer I bought Iceland 1974-1999. Very happy with that at a very good price. Good deals and auctions exist you just have find them. I search 3 or 4 auctions site plus some dealer's website. Daniel

Swabbie, I do know what you mean...lately I jump between worldwide covers and Argentina..What told me to collect Argentina ? I do not have a clue...i do not find many of the stamps attractive..theres all the Famous Men that they keep issuing over and over with all those watermarks (i have yet to deal with them) But I am not jumping into anything big with Argentina...i win the lower priced auctions and lose the higher ones..still in the learning process of whats a fair price to pay for a 1931 zeppelin stamp..of course with the zepp covers the prices are all over the board...eventually I will pick up specialized books (in English) ...much to learn !!

I find that the best deals are to be had at the stamp club and the local dealer. Most of the time.
