My guess is that this is not an Indian Cancellation.
a separate scan focusing in on the strike would be helpful.

This one proved a bit tricky, but I think I've tracked it down, without trying to be too clever this time. It seems to be 'Halu Bazar - Bhiwani' in what is now Haryana State in northern India. This is the Wiki entry on Bhiwani: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BhiwaniThe destination is a bit hard to read, too, but I think it's probably Lachmangarh, not too far away in Rajasthan State. Needs a bit more digging, but from recollection, Lachmangarh was in the old Jaipur State. |

well done Tony Bhiwani could be the town or airport "halu bazar" ...sub post office? could not find that anywhere. Sounds like a market post office.

Yes, I'd guess Halu Bazar would be a sub-office under Bhiwani. The hierarchy of British Indian post offices could get quite Byzantine, but I would have expected Halu Bazar to be at the very bottom of the heap.
Incidentally, I think your first Lachmangarh and last Lachhmangarh are the same place. The last entry confirms that it was in the old Jaipur State. Must see if I can find a Jaipur State CDS from it |

If the answer is affirmative, perhaps this is the wrong topic, but here goes... Am I imagining RANGOON G.P.O. or is that what this says? If so, would anyone know what the bottom of the ring would say? (A friend is borrowing my SG Empire, so at the moment I can't see whether it comments on India stamps in Burma.) |

Certainly looks like RANGOON GPO to me, Cjd. There's a wide range of possibilities for the bottom arc. A large GPO like Rangoon would have had dedicated CDSs for all sorts of things: parcels, registered, money orders, telegraphs, telephones and on and on.
Gibbons only comments on India used in Burma up to around the 1880s. Later issues are, understandably, quite common with Rangoon postmarks, though there might be some value in very small, up-country post office CDSs, particularly on cover. |

Quote: Bhiwani Halu Bazaar is well documented but never explained I am thinking it is local parlance for a geographic area of the city Probably the busiest PO in Bhiwani in those days, Rod. Bear in mind that literacy was scandalously low, hardly anyone had a telephone, and some of the biggest users of the mails were merchants. (I haven't done, and I'm not going to do, a census of my Indian covers but at a guess, if you took out the merchant's and lawyer's letters, I wouldn't have much left ) |
