UK issued a series of stamps on scary creatures (I got them in the special folder that Canada Post did when they did the Halloween stamps shown above).
I don't have a scanner so, unfortunately, I cannot share them with you. There was also a set from Ireland (Eire).

I never knew the Canadian stamps glow in the dark. Will have to get myself a UV lamp.

The Sleepy Hollow stamp is pretty cool. Was it issued around the time the Johnny Depp movie came out? Can't find a year on the stamp.

Used to love Halloween as a child. What better than dressing up in your favourite characters and messing around, while getting free candy? My old neighborhood in good ol' Mississauga many got into the fun. Houses with eerie lights and tape cassete players with eerie sounds. Even the ocasional neighbor dressing up and hiding in the corners of their porches, and scaring the hell out of inocent children dressed up as Pocahontas!

Nowadays, living in Portugal, you don't get that. The equivalent is Carnaval (in February) but the party is different (parades which include half naked women dancing on floats - Brazilian influence). You win some, you lose some hahah.
You still see alot of children on those days going to school all dressed up.

Last time I saw anything major that resembled Halloween, was when I spent the Halloween weekend of 2008 in Southampton in southern England. Didn't see too much, but on my way back to the hotel after dinner, I saw plenty of grown men dressed up in costumes probably on their way to parties I guess.
Walking down a pitch black sidewalk and seeing someone approach in a very dark costume is rather spooky!

I will have to see what I can dig up. I love the previous stamps shown and poems shared. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I've even toyed with the idea of a Halloween topical collection. Right now I am dressed as Jake Blues of The Blues Brothers at work.

I always thought of this machin as being rather Halloween-ish.

Are those phosphor bars my scanner is picking up on the left and right edge of the stamp?

They are indeed Phosphor bands [bars]. A nice ghoulish-looking Queen if ever I saw one.

Halloween, the night of Goblins and Ghouls,
To be in the dark is only for fools,
It's the time we must pray for our soul's resurrection,
For fear that we cross with the HORROR COLLECTION!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a dark and miserable day. The wind was howling and rain was incessant. I trembled with fear at each clap of thunder

As the carriage pulled up outside of the old hall, I can remember feeling shivery and excited. The rain continued to fall.....and the CLAPof thunder was deafening.

I entered the Hall, looking around me as I went. YIKES! There is was, that huge Dracula monster I'd been told about.

It towered above me, the blood was dripping from it's huge fangs.
But that wasn't all, just behind him, as if lurking in the rear ready to pounce, was Frankenstein ! HELP!. The two evil monsters together !

I ran and ran...phew. I was out of breath when I bumped into a table. A man growled at me. He said his name was Walsall
"Would you like one of these",

...and he gave me this envelope with that horrible Frank on the front of it, YUCK!
"Here, have another and send it to your worst enemy", he growled again.

I got scared and started to run. And run and run. If I looked up I saw them...Wolfman,The Phantom of the Opera,The Mummy [No, not my Mummy]

....and Ghouls and Goblins, the Werewolf and Vampires...even ones that glowed under a UV lamp ...HEEEEEELLLPPP!

So I ran and ran again, I had to get out...and the wind was still hooooooowwwwling, and I ran and ran. Finally, I found myself in the relative safe haven of dimly lit room full of children. They all had tongs between their grubby fingers [Oops! Sorry, Tweezers....don't you just love that word]
Phew! Safe at last.
But as I looked closer, I could see that they were....yes....they were drawing Vampires and Ghouls and Gob.............

I turned and ran to my carriage. It was still raining. I locked the door.

I must remember to think twice before I go to another Stamp Exhibition !

I don't think there is any trick or treating, but there are many parties and celebrations. There are many Americans living here and many other nationals join in.

We used to have a party in our pub for many years. All the Israelis came and had a great time. We would all dress up and the pub would be decorated with Black Netting dusted with flour ! They were memorable evenings. The kids had their parties too.

Ah! The memories.

Here is a larger scan of the Lithuanian Angel of Death stamp commemorating the crash of the Lituanica, which crashed 650km short of Kaunas, Lithuania near the end of a transatlantic attempt. This is the first time I've looked at it larger than life, and it looks less "spooky."

The set has six stamps, with five different designs...this is the only one that is sort of relevant to this topic.

I suppose that the figure on the Lithuanian stamp is that of an angel, but it does not seem to be a very comforting or loving angel. The stamp, in my opinion, is a very dark stamp. The broken plane at the angel's feet is very macabre.
