In the past Rod has placed shots of his file hierarchy, etc. here to help others for cataloguing purposes and I imagine many others are proficient at taking screen shots of stamps for their own purposes.

JPG is req'd here but some time ago I read somewhere that screen shots of stamps (or even file hierarchies) for one's own storage purposes should be in GIF format. I would appreciate some enlightenment from the experts here.

well, it really doesn't matter so much,it's what you are comfortable with. The smallest size (kb) is the png format.

JPEG is preferable over GIF.

Both GIF and JPG are compressed formats which are not ideal. JPG at least allows you to specify the amount of compression.
High resolution scans + low compression = large files sizes though.
GIF are virtually a dead format after the arguments regarding licensing costs.
