It is incredible how many colour variations you can get in the one stamp.

May not be the one stamp.
My catalogues are away, but IIRC
two printings, identified by one and two framelines
as the border of the stamp.

Being from Southern Africa I would guess sun bleaching could also be one other reason for various shades.

...and the purple may have some fugitive ink characteristics maybe?

The version with outer framelines has three listed shades in SG: SG 25 pale violet, SG 25a dark violet and SG 25b violet (to bright).
