My Name Is Mike And I Collect Too Much!

Hi everyone,

I'm a member over at Coincommunity (as well as other collecting forums) and don't want to have to say the words in my subject line! I just acquired an extensive stamp collection complete with the album you see below. It has the name of the original owner and the date "1930" written in it. The majority of the stamps are from the 19th and early 20th century from all over the world. It is safe to say every country is represented there whether it be a couple stamps or 20 or 30.
There are three more various binders (one binder just of pre-1950 Chinese stamps, one of US plate blocks and uncut sheets and US singles. It's crazy. There is even an envelope of unsorted stamps. and a small box of them too.

Now thats the type of collection worth acquiring...many of us are in the hunt and its difficult to turn down a real bargain !!

I love those old albums. I started a thread a while back regarding this topic.
These can often be picked up for pennies and whilst they may never make you rich they often contain items of interest if not value.
Get scanning and show us some of your favourite pages.

Oh, oh, a collection from another collector and admirer of hexagonal shapes on stamps and cancels too. is that a triple hexagon cancel on a Turkey stamp? Could we get a closer look at that one please?

I haven't seen those Persian ones before now. Thanks for posting! I kept the pic for my to-get files.

The whoda is a Turkey stamp. The whadda is the third one donw on the right-hand side, a green-coloured stamp, with a 6-sided cancel, or at least my bleary eyes see something like that there. Maybe it's on my screen????

Not the greatest pic, but here you go. I knew what you meant, but didn't see it at first. Is there any significance behind the cancellation?

Thanks. First I've seen on Turkey but I am rather new at hexagon cancels.

In other countries in Europe a hex cancel may mean the stamp was used in special service some way. Telegrams, marine, tax owing (postage due), something different than postal use usually, a hexagon being used to differentiate between the regular circle and the special use.

Sometimes you have to post something like this out on the regular forum (start a new topic) so lots of people can see it. Not everyone looks in here all the time I don't think.

Welcome. As for your subject line, most of us can relate because we also "collect too much". That pesky collecting bug can make me feverish while on the hunt for new material.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. I primarily collect WWII military antiques now but I still have a love for coins and stamps. They were my first hobbies when I was in elementary school. I gave my original stamp collection away to an old high school friend but think I might keep a few pieces from this lot. With a 4 year old son and another on the way in late Feb or early March, I need to work on building them something nice to pass down to them.

I guess eventually when I build up enough posts I will sell some things here. But in the meantime I need to just learn a bit and make up for the 25 years away from the stamp hobby.
