Thanks Jerry. That was an interesting article and it helped me to decide whether I was going to collect the adhesive U.S. stamps....definitely not by that article. First, I have a small apartment, so the fumes are out of the question. Second, there is enough to do with this hobby of stamp collecting and making it risky kind of takes all the fun out of it. The riskiest thing that I do in the hobby is cut the crystal mounts to fit the stamp. Donna |

I suppose I'll mention this as an aside, but I was reading the forum on my iPad and clicked the link for the magazine and it sure looks good on the iPad. Last time I tried, I had lifted the PDF the APS issues and most the the graphics didn't make it. But this epaperflip link does the job very nicely and easy to navigate as well.

Larry --
I'm a fellow iPad owner. I love mine; assume you do to?
You can also download/save the AP issues to PDF and read them on iPad. I use DropBox to make them available on multiple platforms.

Kirk,
I had tried that, but when I put the PDFs in all the heavy graphics where dropped and all I saw was blank space. Very funny. I tried reading them in Goodreader and probably the iBook app.
Are you reading them straight off of DropBox off of the DropBox app?
Beyond that, I have also put my cd of the Deegam Machin stuff into the iPad which is really useful. Part of the problem with the Deegam cd, IMO, is that when you need to check some detail, you have to get up from your stamp table and go over to your computer, with the iPad, the computer is already there. I've also put portions of the Scott catalog into the device and I think it is the perfect medium for magazines and color printed material.

I'm not sure Larry.
I usually "create" my PDFs from my PC, not from the iPad. In other words, I used Windows to download the AP, Linn's, etc. Then I move it to Dropbox. I have had some glitches reading a PDF inside Dropbox. I thought the latest updates had fixed everything. I also use iBooks to read my PDFs but I've never tried any of the 3rd Party readers.
By the way, I like the addition of "Collections" in iBooks.
I'll try to repeat my process and see if I get errors in my PDF.

Hi Larry and Kirk,
Regarding the iPad. I thought Apple wasn't going to allow anything Acrobat, especially the reader. Did I mis-interpret the tech news?

Hi Donna
Did you really mean Crystal Mounts, or did you mean Showgard, Scott, Prinz, etc. mounts? If really Crystal Mounts, be careful. First the original Crystal mounts are no longer made and second I have seen stamps ruined by the mount shrinking and an album page ruined by brown gum residue. I don't know how long it takes but it eventually happens.
If the other kind of mount, it is real easy to use one of the guillotine cutters and it is worth the cost. The one that looks like a office paper cutter works well and I have been using the same one for 20 years. I do not know how well the rotary ones work. The key is to cut a mount without the stamp in the cutter. Measure the stamp perf to perf and add 3 mm and cute a mount that width. If US stamps its best to use the pre-cut for the majority of stamps.

Kirk,
I really don't know because it doesn't work for me.
I downloaded the December issue as a pdf, I placed the pdf into my DropBox and then accessed the pdf from BOTH my iPad and iPhone4 and in both case certain pieces of graphical material did not come through. Like on the "Presidents Column", I don't see the photo of Wade Sadi, just an empty box around where the photo ought to be. There are similar spots through the doc making reading a waste. I had emailed someone on the tech side of AP but never got a response and maybe I'll try again. Or, maybe not.
I did, btw, check the pdf from my computer and from my computer it is just fine, no problem. Go figure.
Jerry B,
I think you have that confused with Flash. Apple isn't letting Flash in. There are no issues with regard to Acrobat documents (pdf's) and although as far as I know Adobe does not have a viewer, there is an excellent 3rd party viewer for the iPad called Goodreader which does a very good job and is well thought of in the community.

Hi Larry,
Now that you mention it I remember no Flash. I am surprised that Adobe has not made an Acrobat Reader for iPad and iPhone.

Perhaps a way to try is KGV Collector's way of soaking off Australia recent 50c - 55c stamps. See this link: https://goscf.com/t/8193&whichpage=7#105206Patience needed, but no chemicals beyond soap. Maybe this will work on other country's stamps as well? (Haven't tried it myself yet, but intend to) Do not soak your iPad too long either! I want a big version of the iPad for my eyes, darn it all. |
