We're always ready for more. I also would not attempt to "clean" them. I'm always afraid I would do more damage than good. I love seeing the different denominations together, the colors are great. I've always liked the embossed stamps and enjoy adding them to my collection when I can.
Very nice, I can see why this is an award winning collection. There are many high value items already posted your grandfather definitely built an outstanding collection. I would not attempt to clean these. The soiling is monimal for their age. Cleaning can affect the color and the detail of the embossing. Some of these have extremely sharp and crisp embossing detail. A very soft blower brush (the type used for cleaning optic and camera lenes) can be used to remove any light dust, avoid any excessive pressure as it can damage the embossing detail.
Barb, Don't clean them... best thing you could do is use a clean (new never used) paint brush and brush them off. You have a VERY NICE collection of cut squares.
Barb, A note on the 3+1 cent U28/29, the 3 cent paid the 1/2 oz under 3000 mile postage drop rate with the 1 cent paying the carrier rate for delivery. These 2 envelopes (U28/29) were the only "single item" that would pay this rate as the first 4 cent stamp was not issued until 1883, long after the carrier charge was removed. They are also very unusual in that I know of no other embossed envelope from any country that has 2 images by design.
