I have the Scott's 2008 catalog since its the only one I can afford at the moment and am using it to document my Africa section in my stamp collection. However I am stumped by the section on Equatorial Guinea. It just has huge blocks of text page after page which show no values but just gives numbers which point to nowhere, at least I can't find them and frankly I'm stumped by this. How is one supposed to document this country? Anyone have any ideas?

There are several countries that Scott does not maintain a comprehensive listing. In those cases, Scott often presents an abbreviated and incomplete listing and does not assign catalog numbers. Some of these because of the sheer number of issues for which there is little/no evidence of postal use by the general public for a significant number the issues -- an example would be Equatorial Guinea. But then again, there are many countries which also fall into that category for which Scott DOES maintain comprehensive listings -- such as Gambia. In some cases, Scott simply decided they didn't want to mess around with it.
Note that even those abbreviated listings for Equatorial Guinea in Scott are NOT close to being complete. I've got at least a hundred EG stamps that are not mentioned in the abbreviated listings, or are "similar" stamps but for which the denominations do not match what is listed in Scott.
For countries/entities/areas such as Equatorial Guinea, Trucial States..., you are probably better off using Gibbons, Michel, or even old Minkus catalogs. |

Well if you find a good catalog for EG, let me know. I have 100-200 uncataloged EG stamps that need some sort of number! |

Quote: Well if you find a good catalog for EG, let me know. I don't know if I'd call this one "good", but for the $1 that I paid for it (lucky find on ebay), I'm happy enough. It lists issues up to July 4, 1975 - 747 numbered stamp issues. Little 64 page book published by Filanumismatica of Madrid. Printed in English, and I assume the catalogue values are in US dollars, although that's never mentioned in the catalogue. Ryan |

Good to know, Ryan -- thank you!
Scott has this big gap between 1972-1979 where it only provides a rough listing. Even the cataloged items before and after that time period do not appear to be complete. |

The Gibbons Simplified has a huge number of "appendix" sets for Equatorial Guinea (listed but not catalogued). There is an Edifil cataloque (in Spanish, published in Madrid) that includes about 30 pages of Republic of Eq.Guinea stamps - but as their year by year printed pages for EG do not include the period 1973-1980, I would be surprised if the cataloque lists these. For what it's worth, here is a link to details of the Edifil catalogue: http://www.sellomania.eu/product_in...ducts_id=927Personally I treat EG in the same way as I treat dune stamps - if I like the stamp I keep it but don't bother looking for it in the catalogue, if I don't like it I pass it on. |

Quote: can we have a peek inside for an example page please? The catalogue lists perf & imperf varieties, mint & used values (used generally only for complete sets, though), souvenir sheets, and a very large number of gold-plated stamps. As I said, the catalogue is quite small, it looks to be an A5 sheet size. Ryan |
