For those who may not be familar with some of the resources available on the USPS Web Site, I stumbled across their Publication 100 by accident this evening, so thought I'd post it. It has an excellent history of the US Postal Service from its early inception to the present day:

http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub100.pdf

Interestingly, I came upon this link when I read an article about mail delivery and this point which I never knew before:

Quote:
Until 1912, the US Post Office delivered mail seven days a week. Local religious leaders noticed a decline in Sunday-morning church attendance because of local post offices' doubling as gathering places. They appealed to the government to intervene and close post offices on Sundays.

An interesting piece of postal history.

I have moved to a new home, 20 metres from a Post office,

Well, I guess that if the local post office, general store, and bar is closed then what's left on Sundays?

I have a hard copy of that publication. It is a soft cover book. I can't recall whom I requested from within the USPS, but it was free. If someone can find the mailing address to request the free book, I would suggest posting it here for others to get it. Well worth it.

I don't think the USPS mails these sort of things out anymore. Too expensive to print, when the data is all digitized now and posted on their website for reference. You can download the file on the link above and either save it or print it on your own computer, if you so desire.
