These are great sheets; I'm glad you've posted them because I've enjoyed looking at them. The ones with art are especially impressive.

Why thanks Kirk, If I had known that, I would have posted full scans, but didn't want to bore people. An amazing purchase from the Big Red Bus the cost was a snip, and my Russia collection is growing. The Russia catalogue is vast, they have "birth anniversaries" and "death anniversaries" If Aust Post allowed those we would have gadzillions! |

Yes,the last sheet was issued in 1987 showing the 18-19century commanders and wasr ships. The middle one was issued in 1970 for the USSR philatelic exhibition dedicated to the 100 years of the birth of Lenin. And the first one is a bit tricky..... it looks to me as it was issued for some unofficial exhibition/gathering because it states: 50 years for the State philately. But the first RSFSR stamp was issued in the 1918 and the USSR(CCCP) was issued in 1923... I guess I will need to go to my red books brush up on my russian to get any more details about it.Plus the depicting image of that old scott#204 stamp is really not the best, and I believe such printing would be totally unacceptable by the Soviet Philatelic standards. And the design of the whole sheet is quite simple, not really the style of the russian(if you know what I mean .... while I'm writing this I'm thinking if at all the first RSFSR issue was "blessed" by the government because it only said "Russia 35 Kop"(in cyrillic) with an image of breaking chain with the sword. But it is catalogued under Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic.....And I guess it's for another topic, don't want to hijack your post mate!Do the Scott #'s would help you out? |

Thank you very much for your contribution kmncd. Sorry, I need the SG numbers to place in my database. Thanks for the subsidiary information. If you are conversant with Russia, are you able to explain in simple language the history behind the "execution of the 26 commisars"?
I read wiki, and couldn't grasp the reason for their execution, nor why the monument was removed in 2009?

Well if the wikipedia doesn't have the right answer,I'm guessing no one will :)))I really think it's the history with 3 or more versions to it,we can only throw some newly found facts and stir things up for more interesting dialogue.I have read few articles on this event, but nothing serious or insightful. If you would ask my point of view..... well first of all that region is famous for blood revenge even to this day in the rural areas,it's like a thanksgiving to the american folks.then the importance of the Tsaritsyn Front(so called souther front) was huge to the soviet interest, even Lenin openly stated somewhere that the revolution would go belly up without Baku oilfields.... and as the matter of fact there were also a british involvement who were sponsoring the Azerbaijani nationalistic party I do believe so.Personally I believe it might have to do something with Stalin, because he himself is from Tbilisi(Georgia) and to him the blood revenge is not a "foreign" thing. And at that time he was a "Narkomnat" the abbreviation - Peoples Commissars of Nationalities/Ethnicities of Russias. It was the Soviet Union body set up to deal with non russians.A good positions for such paranoid person as the Stalin himself who loved to "liquidate" peopple sometimes for no apparent reason.Plus I do remember reading that in 1918 Stalin was appointed chairman of the revol. military council of the southern front.... but not really sure exactly when- before the execution,or after... if it happened before the shooting of the commissars it could be a good point.... I really believe history sometimes should be unanswered, rather than being "naked"/examined to the tiniest point. |

If you are still looking for SG numbers for your posting of 13th June 2011:
1. only a philatelic souvenir I think - the stamp depicted at the top of the sheet was SG260
2. SG MS3799 (1970) Lenin birth centenary. All-Union Philatelic Exhibition, Moscow
3. SG 5824-28 (1987) only issued in sheetlet form. Russian naval commanders |
