My other question about Sudan made me start wondering about how many SCF members have started collecting a new country? I don't mean a new collection, I mean a newly-formed nation or stamp-issuing authority.
I have a few stamps from several of these countries. Not many though.
I remember when I got back into my stamp collection a year or so ago, finding a list of "vanished lands". It was 4 pages (double sided) of countries that had disappeared or changed names or merged with other countries. Unfortunately they didn't date the list so it could be several years out of date.
Ever since I picked up a cover with the provisional stamps of the Ukraine, I have been looking for ways to collect this re-newed country (especially the provisionals).
Last winter, I saw a Boy Scout's accumulation of recent Ukraine collected on piece, sourced from a relative that worked at a charity, and I seriously considered looking into them further. I went as far as checking the usual suspects for current auctions, and didn't see much on offer. Very striking stamps, though.
If you go back to 1975, the new nations of Tuvalu and Kiribati were created with the peaceful separation of the Gilbert and Ellice islands. This was followed in the 1980's by the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Palau when the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands ended.
