hi all. It's been tough finding a philatelic forum for me, having just got my own computer. NEway, I rescued what remains of my grandfather's collection from destruction, as when he died all the books in the house went into a hole in the ground. I plucked these albums off the bookshelves before the rest went out the door. My Dad tells me that Grandpa's collection was so large it looked like a "stack of encyclopedias" and that he sent the "best stuff away for appraisal, and never got it back." Anyway, very much a newbie to a lot of this, I'd like to know if I should be putting insurace on the collection maybe? It appears to be valuable, but it will take quite a while to put on all the pics, so here's a few for now :)

so the mystic description of a z-grill 1-cent blue franklin seems to match mine, which is 13X17 btw... any idea of the values of any others, of opinions on the potential z-grill?

Welcome to the forum. The U.S. classics present quite a problem for the beginning collector. Some of the differences are very minor. Based on the images posted I believe the stamps are
1 Scott 73
2 Based on the appearance I believe that is a Scott 94 F grill 9x13mm (11-12x15-17 points). It looks too small for a Z grill which is 11X14mm (13-14x17-18 points)
3 Scott 11A
4 Scott 63
5 Scott 24
6 Scott 25 or 26 (can't tell from scan)
7 Scott 65
You might go to your local libraty and see if they have a copy of Scott Specialized catalogue of U.S. Stamps and Covers. If that is not avalable then Scotts Standard catalogue Vol 1

thanks. am kinda overwhelmed with all of them, there are lots. I look forward to the help from everyone here, as borrowing the scott catalogue from my library did little to actually educate me on how to spot differences and errors... just wondering... I intend to take a pic of all of them as much for the enjoyment of those on this forum as for myself. Would it be more appropriate to continue tis same thread or start a new one for each country or what do you suggest?

wheatpennymaniac. Many of the differences and types of early stamps can be difficult. Feel free to post any scans/pics and questions. It would be best to start new threads as it is easier to maintain the shorter single topic threads. Additionally, it is easier for people to search the site if the topics are broken up and named appropriately.
There is a lot of expertise with the members on this site and all are happy to assist in questions. I look forward to seeimg more of your stamps.
