Hi!

Is it a good idea to use mounts inside a stockbook? What I am doing is placing a strip of mount in the clear strip and then placing the stamps inside it. I am doing this because to keep the stamps safe from moisture.

My concern is,

1. Will it damage the clear strips of the stockbook in the long run?

2. Will it stress the stockbook binding?

3. Overall is it safe?

Please see the image below as what I mean.

Thanks in advance.

welcome Indieguy,
Whilst ducking the reply,
may I say, I empathise with what must be a very
difficult task, collecting in a humid environment.

Personally, I would be seeking out a stamp club,
and talking to stamp dealers, on how they manage their
collections.
Hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks rod222,

Unfortunately, we do not have any clubs, and the stamp dealers in my city do not care storing their stamps properly. I have not bought a single stamp from these people ever. This is a sad story.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I found a few packs of old showguard style mounts like yours probably 20+ years old. The glue on the back is cracked and some mounts are wavy (warped) but still not sticky and all the strips separated from each other without leaving residue on the mount it was ontop of. having seen this I would say as long as the mounts don't get damp they should be fine in there.

( we all know what will happen if those mounts get damp in there, so if you live in the tropics or somewhere with high humidly think about that incase the AC fails for a few days.)

as far as the thickness of the mount plus stamp, I just cleaned out a cut squares stock book and they did over the years pull the glassine pocket out a little but but the book still functions as required.

I would say if its hard to get it in the pocket it will damage it over the years if it slides in easy the thickness is fine.

(on another note I have a old stockbook that had nothing in it and it shrank making it very difficult to slide stamps in the pockets they pulled in so tight.)

Be careful Edwin, pressure on a mint stamp
has the gum adhering to the stock book page,
(nasty)

What you are doing is a bit overkill. The modern stock books are designed to prevent sticking of the stamp. the protective page does just that.

Thanks.

@stampvirgin - I understand the overkill part. I am using Prinz 2025 stockbooks. Only because 6 months our humidity stays around 70% with a temparature of 35 C, I am concerned how to preserve my mint collection for long term. I have a nice cabinet and stockbooks are kept veritcal. Low light.

The mounts, I have heard prevents moisture. Again, on another forum I have read someone from Malaysia reported, the stamps got tonned just from the top of the strips. That is inside the strips the stamps were fine. The part that remains outside the stockbook strips got tonned.

Well, I am getting scared as what to do. Using mounts, the way I did, is an expensive way for sure. I have to buy almost 500 usd of mounts to cover all my stockbooks.

Need some suggestions folks. I am really in a tight spot.

as a once suggested. If you have an airtight container...
put the stock books in that. then put some rice in a cheesecloth and put that in with them. The rice will absorb any moisture...
