I recently acquired a few old stamp albums that have been in the family for years. They are hand done albums that are over 50 years old. I've tested the paper and found that it isn't acid-free (given the age of the books I guess that isn't surprising). Although the stamps have been in these books for all these years, I'm guessing that in the long run it would be a good idea to protect them going forward. A lot of work went in the albums, so I don't want to get rid of them. I'm a complete novice, but I was thinking if I place the stamps in mounts that would protect them from the non-acid-free paper.

I have some questions about going about doing that and would appreciate any and all advice anyone would be willing to offer -

1. Is my original assumption correct? Will the mounts (the ones I'm looking at are the split back kind) protect the stamps from the paper? (I know the mounts could get expensive, but the albums are worth it.)

2. I think the hinges will come off the pages pretty easy (if not I can cut them), but am unsure about removing them from the stamp. If the hinge isn't acid-free, which would cause more damage - leaving it attached to the stamp or attempting to remove it?

3. There are some covers in the album also, I was thinking I would just leave them mounted the way they are. I would assume that the envelope isn't acid free either so what's the point. And if it is, then I'm assuming that the envelope would protect the stamp from the album paper. There is glassine between every page to protect the cover front the back of the previous page. Do I need to worry about that being acid-free also? I can replace the glassine.

I know that's a lot of questions, so thanks in advance for the advice and if anyone can think of something I didn't think to ask, please let me know.

Novice: Welcome to the forum. I am not an expert but I am sure one will be along shortly. Let me say though that you sound like you will make a wonderful curator for those albums.

Welcome Novice,
my words, would be one of caution,
the world is full of good intentions
but you may end up doing more damage than repair.

You have enquired which suggests you are sensible,
but if you intend to do it, be committed,
it will not be an easy task, and the collection may end up
split if you lose interest.

Personally, I would be first, joining a stamp club
or seeking out a few dealers and getting their advice
on your desire.
Collectors love stamps, and I am sure you will get great advice.
I have hand made albums that have lasted years
without apparent damage, and I have left some
as they are.
Handling stamps, or poor storage, in the main, creates the damage
All stamp albums should have a slipcase.
Cheers
