smauggie. it's not accounting the stamps... it's having a database that tells you what you have and where. It saves a lot of time looking through books and such.
I am buying Indo-China lately, you know how easy it is to just print up an inventory of what I don't have and send it to someone? Much easier then writing it down by hand.

I'd love to know where good online software is, or software that will run on mobile devices, the last thing I want is to carry around a big book or checklist so I know what I have, that's a pain. For other collections I have, I either put up a web page that I can access from my phone, or have a database within the phone, but I sure don't want to have to enter every stamp ever released in the U.S. to do it.

Ideas?

Some wise words, Barb. A collection should be enjoyed, not just the hunt, but the little 'galleries' we have in our albums.
Personally, I keep track of my US and Canada collections in an old paperback Harris 1974-75 catalogue, where I check off in pencil (I started making too many mistakes in pen!) the stamps I have, used and unused. Simple, compact, I can take it with me to shows, though many of the pages are held together with scotch tape these days.
The sound of making spreadsheets and such sounds too much like being on the job, rather than a hobby. What I love about stamps is that they are low tech.

AH... but, I'd be IT
and
it makes perfect sense to me.

Meanwhile, I've got sites on the 64bit computer, and will let you know my thoughts after I've selected the software... and converted it.

One must remember Stamp Collecting

Ah, that's my problem - entropy! No matter how much I try to work on my stamps, the amount of disorder increases ...

Entropy! Egads!
Ryan you are a true wordsmith,
Please accept an honorary place in the lexiconographers of SCF.

Yes,
I reckon for every 100 stamps that go over my desk
20 get mounted, 30 go to duplicates
and 50 get stored in the "will get around to it" box.

I find eating a sleeping impinges greatly,
on stamping time.

I guess I do things backwards. I have a small spreadsheet where I keep a list of those stamps I'm looking for and wanting to buy. It does not include any stamps out of my financial reach. It's all on 1 sheet and contains a list of U.S. Federal Revenues, U.S. Coils, Hawaiian, CSA and regular U.S. postage. I keep it in my wallet so when I'm on the road or at a show I can easily identify what I need.

You are too organised Art,
you need to buy more stamps to enter the
hallowed ground of mayhem.

I'm using StampCat.

Nice thing is that you can use built-in form designer and add
field or check box or anything else you want
Data is stored as access database.

I have tried StampManage before but in the end found it either not flexible enough to use as a total solution or not useful enough to warrant its $50 price tag. Not that StampManage is a bad program, in the end it really depends on your overall confidence when it comes to spreadsheet and/or database applications.

For those who are either more ambitious, a spreadsheet laid out according to your own personal criteria is probably close to ideal for most collector's needs. On the other-hand, if you want your forms predefined, and want the ease of not having to cross-reference your catalogs (at least for most simplified stamps) then software such as StampManage might be for you.

Thanks Rod. I needed to be reminded of that.
