Lucky, that is a very nice cover. I never made it to Phantom Ranch at the bottom--only went half way down by mule. The Grand Canyon is truly a wonder to see.
There have been special postmarks for "Adams Pack Station" in the past which is near Sierra Madre CA and Chantry Flat just north of Santa Anita. http://www.adamspackstation.com/
Both of these places have a close relationship with Route 66.
At Supai they also have had Helicopter Mail. I have a cover that mentions both Mule & Helicopter Mail. I also have a pictorial postmark for Adams Pack Station and one for Sierra Madre's annual Wisteria Festival. Now I'm trying to remember which Route 66 town "Wild Hogs" was filmed in.
"Mailed by mule" is not such a nice commentary on the sender. (Though I don't know the sender...it might be half right.) "Delivered by mule" would be kinder...
My friend said he saw/bought/sent the postcard and then actually saw that scene on the face of a cliff that night. He said he'd started hiking up some little trail that went off into a different canyon than the one he'd been traveling on. At some point on this nightly excursion he stopped and sat on a rock for a puff and looked up at the face of the cliff in front of him and there it was.
After your posts regarding "stars" I took closer look at the picture and realized that I misunderstood my friend when he said "I looked up and there it was." I assumed it was some sort of natural occurrence on the canyon wall that took on this shape. I just spoke with him and he said "NOOOO, when I looked UP that is the shape that the two canyon rims create." This would explain the stars in the night sky.
