This cover, I wish it was in better shape, appears to have two cancels,

The purple CDS cancel is dated Sept 17, 1914

The black cancel, appears to be dated Sept something 1916

Two years difference ??????????

Second, what is general delivery ???

Bob,

Don't know why the date difference. Maybe it wasn't changed, was incorrectly set, or the 14 on the general delivery stamp stands for something else.

General delivery is mail that just comes to the post office and has to be picked up by the recipient. As you see, it has no address. The person would just go in and ask for their mail. I wonder if it's done anymore.

Had another thought on the 14. Maybe this general delivery item was to be held for 14 days from the date of receipt before being returned to sender.
