What is sadder is that there are 4 torn stamps from this limited issue.

A stamp, or rather, what used to be a stamp, that is in two pieces is worth that much?
That's really mind boggling. Must be some rich person that bought it simply because it's rare.
I've never heard of a real collector even considering something in that condition.
Does anyone know of other stamps that fetch that kind of price in such a condition?

Well, until now I never thought that a torn stamp was worth anything. From now on, damaged classic stamps will be worthy of saving.

I think one point of distinction -- it's not just a torn stamp.

It's a rare invert that was recalled and intentionally, perhaps "officially," destroyed. And it has a certification of those facts.

That gives it value -- as opposed to an "ordinary" classic stamp that was accidentally torn by a collector.

would you take the inverted jenny that wound up in the vacuum cleaner? Damaged as it is? I would..

8,000 stamps overprinted..some with inverted overprints, ONE block of four survives, plus this torn stamp... yes it is rare. Not because it is torn, because it is one of 5 known to exist.
